Father’s Day Contest

Dads are pretty special guys. I know my dad has been there for me over the years. Yeah, of course with money, but in other ways too. Like the time he had my back when I stood up for myself, but thought I was going to be in trouble. Or the time I wanted to go to a concert across the state with a van full of people and he actually let me go. Or the time that it was snowing and for some unknown reason, I lost all confidence in driving in the bad weather, so he drove 25 minutes to my house to take me where I needed to go. Seriously, dads have a way of showing up for you when you need them. This Father’s Day, GiftTree would like to help you say, “Happy Father’s Day” to your dad. Tell us why your dad is the best or what you appreciate about him. My dad? I appreciate that he has always accepted me and supported me in my decisions. It didn’t matter if he really thought I was crazy for buying that fixer upper, going to that school or dating that one guy. If I made a decision, he was on board. That has always made it easier to take calculated risks and proceed in life with less fear. I knew I already had someone in my corner. So thanks, Dad and Happy Father’s Day! Now it’s you’re turn. Leave your comment below and you’ll get extra brownie points if you post your entry on GiftTree’s Facebook page too. The winning Dad will receive a $50 GiftTree...

Memorial Day

And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free. And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.~Lee Greenwood Freedom is never free.  ~Author Unknown As Memorial Day approaches this weekend many of our thoughts turn to those that have served, are currently serving and are getting ready to serve our country. We live in a time where there are very few people who have not been directly affected by the service of someone in our military. Here at GiftTree there are some of us who are getting ready to welcome a loved one home from Iraq this weekend and some of us are still waiting for close friends and loved ones to arrive home safely at a later date. Memorial Day has it’s roots all the way back to May 5, 1866 and was originally known as Decoration Day, a day to honor those that lost their lives in the Civil War. It is now observed on the last Monday in May. GiftTree has a nice selection of Memorial Day gifts that can help you find that special way to commemorate the loss of a loved one who has served in the military. While there will be many people observing this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials, most businesses observe the day because it marks the beginning of the summer and all the fun that goes along with it. There will be picnics, barbecues, family gatherings and sporting events taking place all across America this weekend. The Indianapolis 500 has been held on Memorial Day since 1911, and...

Summer

I can’t believe summer is coming up so soon. During the summer, our apartment transforms from a place where we keep the windows closed, eat soups frequently and have piles of library books readily available to something completely different. This is the time of the year that I enjoy keeping fresh cut flowers in the living room. The Color Sensation Bouquet is so far my favorite arrangement for summer. The orange, blue, yellow and pink shades within this arrangement will add the perfect burst of color to welcome summer. In the kitchen, the table cloth gets changed out for one with a summer theme. We have one with strawberries on it just for the strawberry season. It goes up right around the time we go to a u-pick farm on Sauvie Island to get our strawberries to freeze for the year. All of the windows get opened during this time of the year as well. Usually I can either hear Spanish music, someone playing the guitar or, at times, what sounds like someone singing in the shower. A fig tree shades half of our apartment and with the nice cross breeze from having the windows open we really don’t need air conditioning. Our cat loves having the windows open too. She sticks her nose near the window so she can feel the breeze and enjoys scaring off the birds that hang around the fig tree. After you have picked out your favorite arrangement of fresh cut flowers leave us a comment and let us know what you do to welcome...

So You Want to Know About Wine?

For the past few years, my knowledge of wine and wine related things has increased dramatically. One of the main reasons for that is my job here – it’s helpful to customers if you know about wine, especially if they want to send a wine gift. Also, wine and I get a long so well, I wanted to know more about it! So here are are a few things for you to ‘get to know’ my good friend wine! Common wine terms & what they mean: Nose – This is the scent or the aroma of the wine… it’s ‘bouquet’ if you will. What you get when you first smell the wine. Legs – When you swirl your glass of wine, if you notice ‘streaks’ sliding down from the top of the glass, these are the ‘legs’. Typically the higher the alcohol content in the wine, the more legs it will have. Finish – The finish is the after-taste that the wine leaves. A long finish would mean the taste lingers in your mouth more than a short finish. Vintage – Refers to the year that the grapes used to make the wine were harvested. Varietal – This refers to the specific grape type. For example, Chardonnay, Riesling, & Sauvignon Blanc are varietals of white wines; Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon are varietals of reds. Fun Facts about wine: The average bottle of wine holds about 2 ½ pounds of grapes! There is around 100 calories in a 5oz glass of white wine and 110 in a glass of red wine. More wine is consumed in the USA on...

Remembering Birthdays

When I was younger, my grandparents used to send me a card every year for my birthday. It was usually a homemade card and $20 or so to spend on something for myself.  I am not sure how she, or anyone for that matter, remembers birthdays without help. I have never been able to successfully manage a personal planner or keep track of occasions using a wall calendar. I have high hopes when I purchase a planner or calendar but I always forget to check it regularly and end up missing birthdays. If you haven’t discovered GiftTree’s Occasion Reminder service yet, I bet you have forgotten a few birthdays too. When you visit GiftTree’s website you have the ability to establish a free account. Once you establish an account you have access to a multitude of Account Member Benefits, including our occasion reminder service. With the occasion reminder service you will be able to set reminders for upcoming events in your life and then 10 days prior to the submitted date GiftTree will send you an email reminder. With an account you will also be able to keep track of which gift you sent, who received it and the date it was sent. You can also track your monthly gift giving expenses. While logged in, you might also want to subscribe to our special offers email so you can receive money saving offers throughout the year. With this reminder service I won’t be forgetting a birthday any time soon. In fact, I just got a reminder today and I need to order the Birthday Wishes...

Flowers for a Winning Mom

Congrats to Sisters-in-law, Stephanie and Cindy. Stephanie nominated her brother’s wife, Cindy, for GiftTree’s Mother’s Day contest and has won a $50 gift card for herself and flowers for Cindy. Stephanie tells us that Cindy has been through a lot and is more than deserving of a beautiful flower arrangement. We agree! We’ll let Stephanie tell the rest: “I would like to nominate my sister-in-law, Cindy. She is an unusual Mom in this day and age – she stays at home and takes care of her family. When she married my brother 22 years ago, she had a 2 year old special boy who was severely disabled. She was told by many people to put him in a facility. He wasn’t supposed to live past the first year. Well she refused to put him in a home, even after she had 3 more children including twin boys. He lived a loved and wonderful life until he was fourteen when sadly he passed due to his health issues. My other nephews are now almost teenagers and my niece in college. My sister in law recently faced another challenge – treatment for breast cancer. But she didn’t stop caring for her family or providing them with support. She was still making lunches, dinners, doing laundry and going to Little League games. Next to my mom, she is one of the strongest and kindest women I know, so please consider her for your Mother’s Day contest.” Thanks for entering our contest, Stephanie. We hope you and Cindy enjoy your...

Sheep in the Vineyards

Here is an interesting fact about any wine gifts from Oregon that you might send: Oregon wineries have been both cutting costs and improving their green practices by using sheep as mowers in the vineyards. The contemporary term for the practice is “targeted grazing,” which means that the sheep are trained to only eat the grass and other weeds that spring up between the trellises. How are the sheep not tempted by the tender grape leaves? Some stockmen train sheep to associate grape vines and leaves with nausea by giving them lithium chloride by mouth before they reach the vineyards. Other wineries choose to use grazing animals while the vines are dormant. Not only are sheep better for the environment than traditional gasoline-powered mowing methods, but they also cause less compaction of the dirt and their waste provides nutrients that enrich the soil. With biodiversity as such a buzzword in the wine industry, people are wondering if sheep are being used now, what’s next? Chickens, maybe. One Oregon winemaker is experimenting with fowl, planting sorghum between the rows. I’ll keep you posted on his success and any other forward-thinking green practices in the wine world. In the meantime, cheers to going...

Trees for Arbor Day

Last year GiftTree challenged each employee to set a goal for the month of April in recognition of Earth Day, April 22nd, and Arbor Day which is coming up on April 30th. We were encouraged to find a way to use less energy, start a garden or conserve water. I walked more and drove less for the challenge. This year my goal is to plant a tree for my own personal Earth Day/Arbor Day challenge. According to one government site, one tree can generate enough oxygen daily for 18 people, remove $60,000 worth of air pollution and recycle $35,000 worth of water. They can also reduce noise pollution, increase property value and reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent. If you would like to join me and plant a tree this year, or give a tree as a gift, I recommend our Ginkgo Tree-to-Be. The kit contains everything you need to start and grow your own Ginkgo. It even includes an aluminum tag that can be personalized. It would make a great gift for yourself or any tree...

Administrative Professional’s Day

If you haven’t been watching your calendar, you may not realize Admin’s Day is today! Administrative Professionals Day always falls on the Wednesday of the last full week of April. If you are not familiar with the holiday (and you have been trying to figure out what your admin has been hinting at), Admin’s Day is an unofficial U.S. holiday created by the International Association of Administrative Professionals in 1952 to honor administrative professionals nationwide. The holiday used to be known as Secretaries Day but the name was changed to its current name in 2000 in order to include all administrative professionals. It is often customary for employers to give gift baskets or flowers to admins on this day (this might be what the hints were about). Admin’s Day is one of the largest work related holidays in the United States. According to the United States Bureau of Labor, there are currently about 4.3 million secretaries and administrative assistants in the United States. It is one of the largest occupations in the U.S. If you aren’t prepared yet for Admin’s Day, don’t worry, we have quite a few gift options available to help you out. If you are a last minute shopper, many of our gifts can usually be delivered on the same day you order if you place your order early in the day. We even have a whole section of our website dedicated to our favorite Admin’s Day gifts. So, check out our website. And if you have any stories about why you appreciate your admin, please leave a comment. I would love to hear...

My First Mother’s Day

I’m coming up on my first Mother’s Day and I’m not sure what to expect. Will it be like my birthday? I mean the first few are really fun and exciting and then it just becomes another day? Or will it be something else? It’s weird to think that someone will now be appreciating me in this way. It makes me think of all the mom’s in my life that I have appreciated over the years. Yes I said moms, you know you have them too. There’s your mom, you mother-in-law and your best friends mom, who used to scold you when your own mom wasn’t around. I know I have quite a few “moms” these days and I want to appreciate them all. So I started thinking about how I want to be appreciated on this day. Although I work for a gifting company, I don’t think getting something in a box is really what I am looking for (unless it’s diamonds). I think what I really want is to do something fun with my new baby. At this stage in life it’s not hard to get her undivided attention and I think that would really do the trick for me and maybe a thank you from my husband for 9 months of discomfort and irrational behavior. This Mother’s Day remember to appreciate your own mom but also give that pseudo mom a call and tell her how much you appreciate her too. I promise, she will not forget it. If you are trying to find a unique gift for that very special mom check out GiftTree’s selection...

Congrats to Jennifer in NY

Congratulations to Jennifer Andryszczyk, the winner of our review contest for March. Jennifer is a long time GiftTree customer and we’re thrilled with her winning review! “I am writing this review based on my past experience with GiftTree. I have ordered at least three or four times from this site and I can’t say enough about it. Everyone whom I ordered gifts and flowers for just loved them. I have never had any problems with deliveries, the orders have always showed up on time. Another reason I really like this site is that the shipping charges are outstanding. It costs me more to call a local florist where delivery usually runs me about $15. The selections of those local places are nowhere as great as here. I love the fact that I have only paid $9.95 for shipping on anything I have ordered. I will be ordering again later during the month of March, this time for a happy occasion (a birthday). I’m sure my friend will love whatever I send her. I plan on sending her a basket of flowers or a plant with some cookies or candies and fruit to go along with it (yum, yum) what more could you ask for. I will definitely recommend this site to all of my friends and family. How could I not, with the prices so reasonable and the service so fantastic. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to write a review about this site.” -Jennifer...

Be Careful What You Wish For

A project manager, software engineer and hardware engineer were in Miami Beach for a two-week period helping out on a project. During their lunch hours, they would often walk up and down the beach. In the middle of one of these walks, they stumbled upon a lamp. The hardware engineer picked up the lamp and rubbed it. A genie appeared and said, “Normally I would grant 3 wishes, but since there are 3 of you I will grant you each one wish.” The hardware engineer chimed, “I would like to live in a huge house in St. Thomas, with no money worries and given all of the fame in the world.” The genie granted him his wish and sent him off to St. Thomas. The software engineer went next. “I would like to live on a huge yacht cruising the Mediterranean, with no money worries and a gorgeous wife.” The genie granted him his wish and sent him off to the Mediterranean. Last, but not least, it was the project manager’s turn. “And what would your wish be?” asked the genie. “I want them both back after lunch,” replied the project manager. Since the beginning of time wishing has been believed to be magical by both the superstitious and non-superstitious alike. Ancient legends from far away countries have told tales of wish-granting genies while others cast their wishes upon flowers, hold their breath under tunnels or search for wishing wells which are said to grant the deepest desire of any person that sacrifices a coin inside as payment. While dreaming of something wonderful of our own, GiftTree came across...

Remembering My Sister on Siblings Day

Ahhh. Siblings. Just the word conjures up all kinds of feelings and memories… I am the oldest of three girls. Being the older sister has its advantages and its disadvantages. I am older and bigger, which was always an advantage during our quarrels and our stunts. Oh yes, girls do stunts too! I somehow convinced my sister to get on the back of my bike so we could attempt to jump the bike on a homemade ramp that yours truly engineered. Now this wasn’t one of those fancy stunt bikes they have now-a-days…if it were we would have made the jump…trust me. Nope, this was a bike from the late 1970’s, complete with a banana seat and a sissy bar. Oh if only she had held onto the sissy bar tighter or, should I say, if only the sissy bar hadn’t broken! Let’s just say that things didn’t go as planned. I landed the jump, but the sissy bar broke upon impact and as she slid off the back of the bike she gashed her inner thigh open on the jagged piece of aluminum from where the bar broke. And she cried. And mom got mad…real mad. And she still has a scar, not just any scar, but an ugly scar. On the positive side she has a daily reminder of me. I love my sister, I really do. She lives far away from me now and I miss her. A lot. I wish she was still close enough so I could convince her to get on the back of my bike again so we could do that jump...

Our Hearts are Touched

As many of you may already know, GiftTree provides a free, valuable courtesy service reminding you of your upcoming occasions via phone and/or email. Many people all across the world have taken advantage of this service and send us emails from time to time letting us know how much they appreciate the service. One email that we received recently was from a man that sent a bouquet of flowers to someone very special last year. His card message read: “Will you marry me?” This year when he received his courtesy reminder he requested that we add a new date to our calendar…the day of their wedding anniversary! She had said yes! He went on to say that there must have been something magical in GiftTree’s flowers for her to have fallen for him and that he couldn’t thank us enough for our help in making it happen. Awe! This year for their anniversary the Champagne & Fondue for Two are on his wife’s wish list and he said he isn’t stopping there. He’s also going to charm her with another bouquet of flowers to remind her of the day they made the biggest (and best) decision of their lives together. GiftTree is honored to hear stories like this and we’re honored to be a part of your lives no matter what the occasion calls for. Thank you so much for making GiftTree what it is, because without you we would be wandering the halls aimlessly each...
