Administrative Professional’s Day

If you haven’t been watching your calendar, you may not realize Admin’s Day is today! Administrative Professionals Day always falls on the Wednesday of the last full week of April. If you are not familiar with the holiday (and you have been trying to figure out what your admin has been hinting at), Admin’s Day is an unofficial U.S. holiday created by the International Association of Administrative Professionals in 1952 to honor administrative professionals nationwide. The holiday used to be known as Secretaries Day but the name was changed to its current name in 2000 in order to include all administrative professionals. It is often customary for employers to give gift baskets or flowers to admins on this day (this might be what the hints were about). Admin’s Day is one of the largest work related holidays in the United States. According to the United States Bureau of Labor, there are currently about 4.3 million secretaries and administrative assistants in the United States. It is one of the largest occupations in the U.S. If you aren’t prepared yet for Admin’s Day, don’t worry, we have quite a few gift options available to help you out. If you are a last minute shopper, many of our gifts can usually be delivered on the same day you order if you place your order early in the day. We even have a whole section of our website dedicated to our favorite Admin’s Day gifts. So, check out our website. And if you have any stories about why you appreciate your admin, please leave a comment. I would love to hear...

My First Mother’s Day

I’m coming up on my first Mother’s Day and I’m not sure what to expect. Will it be like my birthday? I mean the first few are really fun and exciting and then it just becomes another day? Or will it be something else? It’s weird to think that someone will now be appreciating me in this way. It makes me think of all the mom’s in my life that I have appreciated over the years. Yes I said moms, you know you have them too. There’s your mom, you mother-in-law and your best friends mom, who used to scold you when your own mom wasn’t around. I know I have quite a few “moms” these days and I want to appreciate them all. So I started thinking about how I want to be appreciated on this day. Although I work for a gifting company, I don’t think getting something in a box is really what I am looking for (unless it’s diamonds). I think what I really want is to do something fun with my new baby. At this stage in life it’s not hard to get her undivided attention and I think that would really do the trick for me and maybe a thank you from my husband for 9 months of discomfort and irrational behavior. This Mother’s Day remember to appreciate your own mom but also give that pseudo mom a call and tell her how much you appreciate her too. I promise, she will not forget it. If you are trying to find a unique gift for that very special mom check out GiftTree’s selection...

Congrats to Jennifer in NY

Congratulations to Jennifer Andryszczyk, the winner of our review contest for March. Jennifer is a long time GiftTree customer and we’re thrilled with her winning review! “I am writing this review based on my past experience with GiftTree. I have ordered at least three or four times from this site and I can’t say enough about it. Everyone whom I ordered gifts and flowers for just loved them. I have never had any problems with deliveries, the orders have always showed up on time. Another reason I really like this site is that the shipping charges are outstanding. It costs me more to call a local florist where delivery usually runs me about $15. The selections of those local places are nowhere as great as here. I love the fact that I have only paid $9.95 for shipping on anything I have ordered. I will be ordering again later during the month of March, this time for a happy occasion (a birthday). I’m sure my friend will love whatever I send her. I plan on sending her a basket of flowers or a plant with some cookies or candies and fruit to go along with it (yum, yum) what more could you ask for. I will definitely recommend this site to all of my friends and family. How could I not, with the prices so reasonable and the service so fantastic. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to write a review about this site.” -Jennifer...

Be Careful What You Wish For

A project manager, software engineer and hardware engineer were in Miami Beach for a two-week period helping out on a project. During their lunch hours, they would often walk up and down the beach. In the middle of one of these walks, they stumbled upon a lamp. The hardware engineer picked up the lamp and rubbed it. A genie appeared and said, “Normally I would grant 3 wishes, but since there are 3 of you I will grant you each one wish.” The hardware engineer chimed, “I would like to live in a huge house in St. Thomas, with no money worries and given all of the fame in the world.” The genie granted him his wish and sent him off to St. Thomas. The software engineer went next. “I would like to live on a huge yacht cruising the Mediterranean, with no money worries and a gorgeous wife.” The genie granted him his wish and sent him off to the Mediterranean. Last, but not least, it was the project manager’s turn. “And what would your wish be?” asked the genie. “I want them both back after lunch,” replied the project manager. Since the beginning of time wishing has been believed to be magical by both the superstitious and non-superstitious alike. Ancient legends from far away countries have told tales of wish-granting genies while others cast their wishes upon flowers, hold their breath under tunnels or search for wishing wells which are said to grant the deepest desire of any person that sacrifices a coin inside as payment. While dreaming of something wonderful of our own, GiftTree came across...

Remembering My Sister on Siblings Day

Ahhh. Siblings. Just the word conjures up all kinds of feelings and memories… I am the oldest of three girls. Being the older sister has its advantages and its disadvantages. I am older and bigger, which was always an advantage during our quarrels and our stunts. Oh yes, girls do stunts too! I somehow convinced my sister to get on the back of my bike so we could attempt to jump the bike on a homemade ramp that yours truly engineered. Now this wasn’t one of those fancy stunt bikes they have now-a-days…if it were we would have made the jump…trust me. Nope, this was a bike from the late 1970’s, complete with a banana seat and a sissy bar. Oh if only she had held onto the sissy bar tighter or, should I say, if only the sissy bar hadn’t broken! Let’s just say that things didn’t go as planned. I landed the jump, but the sissy bar broke upon impact and as she slid off the back of the bike she gashed her inner thigh open on the jagged piece of aluminum from where the bar broke. And she cried. And mom got mad…real mad. And she still has a scar, not just any scar, but an ugly scar. On the positive side she has a daily reminder of me. I love my sister, I really do. She lives far away from me now and I miss her. A lot. I wish she was still close enough so I could convince her to get on the back of my bike again so we could do that jump...

Our Hearts are Touched

As many of you may already know, GiftTree provides a free, valuable courtesy service reminding you of your upcoming occasions via phone and/or email. Many people all across the world have taken advantage of this service and send us emails from time to time letting us know how much they appreciate the service. One email that we received recently was from a man that sent a bouquet of flowers to someone very special last year. His card message read: “Will you marry me?” This year when he received his courtesy reminder he requested that we add a new date to our calendar…the day of their wedding anniversary! She had said yes! He went on to say that there must have been something magical in GiftTree’s flowers for her to have fallen for him and that he couldn’t thank us enough for our help in making it happen. Awe! This year for their anniversary the Champagne & Fondue for Two are on his wife’s wish list and he said he isn’t stopping there. He’s also going to charm her with another bouquet of flowers to remind her of the day they made the biggest (and best) decision of their lives together. GiftTree is honored to hear stories like this and we’re honored to be a part of your lives no matter what the occasion calls for. Thank you so much for making GiftTree what it is, because without you we would be wandering the halls aimlessly each...

Contest for National Pet Day

April 10th is National Pet Day and GiftTree is celebrating! It’s no surprise that we love our pets around here. GiftTree’s office area is dog friendly and on any given work day, there could be up to 9 dogs hanging out in offices or taking a break playing with other dogs outside. We blog about our dogs, we do an annual Walk for the Animals each year, and we even have a video or two on YouTube showing off our furry friends. I know we’re not the only ones. Dog owners are notorious for being head over heals for their pooches. In celebration of National Pet Day, we’re giving away fun Dogsmarts games to 3 lucky winners. Easter

I remember when I was younger, my stepmom used to put together little Easter care packages for my brother and I. She lives in Louisiana and, at the time, I lived in Florida so we were rarely together for the holiday. The box usually came with a chocolate bunny, candy, Easter grass and other small Easter themed treasures. It was definitely one of the highlights of the year. GiftTree’s Easter baskets really remind me of the boxes I used to get. If you haven’t seen our Easter gifts this year I highly suggest checking them out. We even offer same day or next day delivery for quite a few of our baskets which makes them great for last minute shoppers (like me). Also, in case you didn’t know, Easter is on April 4th this...

An Apple a Day…

The saying goes that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. I don’t know about you, but I eat a lot of apples and I still have to see the doctor! Regardless of how many apples we do or don’t eat, when we need a doctor we are thankful to have them so readily available to us. March 30th has been set aside as National Doctor’s Day. This day was first observed in 1933 and on March 30, 1991 George Bush proclaimed March 30th as National Doctors Day. Within a 9 month period my youngest son, Collin, had a ruptured appendix and bacterial pneumonia. On both occasions the same doctor was very instrumental in paying attention to little details that ended up saving his life. Everyday I am thankful for Dr. Mendenhall’s ability to really listen to his patients and to pay attention to the little details that can so easily be overlooked, yet can mean life or death for those affected. Join me tomorrow in saying thank you to all the doctors that have touched your life. A great way to show your appreciation would be to send your favorite doctor The Best Trophy with Free Engraving. The trophy is made of solid pewter, stands 1.25” tall and the base can be personalized with the doctors three initials. Thank you Dr. Mendenhall for saving my son’s life…not once, but...

Surprise!

Nothing in my lifetime has been more exciting, or terrifying, than making the decision to become a mommy. You always imagine how wonderful all of the planning and first appointments will go after you find out for the first time that you’re expecting a little one and now that ultrasounds can show the gender of your baby it’s much easier to plan ahead for the next 9 months. All of this was in our dream book, but this baby had different plans in mind. Cooperation is just not on this little one’s agenda. After struggling with this for a while, we both agreed that what is meant to be is meant to be and our baby is just going to have to be a surprise! No more trying to find out from here on out. I was snooping through GiftTree’s new baby gifts and I am SO grateful that I’m finding just as many unisex goodies as I am gender specific ones. As a nervous mom with pregnant cravings the Lil’ Lamb Baby Basket is at the very top of my treat list, and it’s perfect no matter what we’re blessed with in 4 months! The featured little lamb that comes in the basket is adorable, soft and wonderfully plush for baby to cuddle and nibble on (after all, we know everything is going straight in it’s mouth). Alongside is a matching rattle which will provide hours of entertainment and will give those gums something gentle and soothing to teeth on. Three keepsake boxes sweetly stack together to hold the most precious firsts; the first tooth, first curl and...

Champagne Goes Green

When giving Champagne gifts do you ever wonder why the Champagne bottles are so thick and heavy? Because of their pressurized, excitable contents, Champagne bottles must be able to withstand at least 6 Gs of force when opened and thus are thicker-walled than normal wine bottles. To put this in perspective, blasting off in a rocket would put about 6 Gs of force on you. The bubbly is powerful stuff indeed. Recently the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) announced the official launch of a new standard Champagne bottle that will significantly cut the Champagne region’s carbon emissions. The heavy bottles previously used were requiring more glass in manufacture and more fuel for transportation, which was adding up to more carbon released into the atmosphere. The new Champagne bottle, which is more than 2 ounces lighter, will reduce annual CO2 output by 8,000 metric tons, which is approximately equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of 4,000 cars. About 300 million bottles of Champagne were produced last year alone. The new bottle has undergone significant testing and market use to ensure the highest quality and safety standards, and we should be seeing them on the market sometime in the next year. Cheers to going...

Tree of Enchantment Ornamental Glass

The new Tree of Enchantment Ornamental Glass is a beautiful work of art. Each signature piece is created by a 12 hour melting process using broken shards of glass from a Seattle, WA supplier that makes windows for cars, homes and offices. Stephen Kitras, a world famous artist, is the designer of this hand-blown glass orb. The internal stranding represents the tree trunk and the branches that reach out to the exterior of the ornament support the translucent tree’s leaves on the globe’s exterior. Truly a stunning work of art by an incredibly talented artist. Stephen got his start as a glass blower in 1988 acquiring his knowledge and skills at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario Canada. His company, Kitras Art Glass, was formed in 1994 and initially he and his wife, Elke, handled production and administrative tasks; shipping products from their dining room table. By 2001 the company’s sales had increased to a point where they had to build a new facility to accommodate the growth. In 2006 Stephen’s oldest daughter, Sophie, joined the company as the sales and marketing manager. In 1999 Stephen suffered the loss of his wife to leukemia, but the vision that she and Stephen had for the company continues to flourish. Each piece of Stephen Kitras’ artwork is an individual, unique piece of art making it a perfect gift for an art collector or someone who enjoys nature. The Tree of Enchantment would make a bold interior decorating statement during the fall and winter months reflecting light while hanging in a window and during the spring and summer months by dramatically adding to...

A New St. Patty’s Day Tradition

St. Patrick’s Day is an incredibly fun excuse to pinch people, “forget” not to wear red so people will kiss you, drink green beer…but why is it that on a holiday like this, those that are TRULY Irish don’t get presents?! I have my own personal reasons for thinking that the Irish should get pampered, showered and adored with gifts on a holiday that came from their own roots. Especially since Irish people are so wonderful, amazing and gift-worthy. Personally, if I were Irish, I would be overwhelmed and feel so loved to receive presents on St. Patty’s Day. IN FACT, I think the Heavenly Cheesecake would be an ideal gift for such a person. A giant piece of luxury that comes in three rich flavors capable of feeding up to 10 people (I say “up to” because, if it were sent to me it would only feed one). To keep up the holiday spirit, select the Simply Vanilla Bourbon Cheesecake flavor. It has a Chocolate Macadamia Crust and is elegantly wrapped in an edible green chocolate bow, hand packaged, and can be delivered right to the Irish recipient. Preferably one with flaming red hair, albino-pale skin covered in freckles, and writes awesome blogs for GiftTree. Money is also green and festive, and could be sent as a gift alongside the cheesecake. Just...

Spring 2010

In case you didn’t know, March 21 is considered by many to be the first day of spring. Some say it is really the middle of spring, because of the position of the sun, but I don’t think spring is quite here yet in the Pacific Northwest. I am very ready for winter to end. Winters in the Northwest are dreadful. Everyone stays indoors because it is so cold, grey and wet outside. The sun comes up late in the morning and it gets dark early. The spring and summer seasons here are, however, magical. The days never seem to end. Everyone is out walking, biking or playing. Neighbors stop to talk to you. Flowers are everywhere and everyone wants to talk about their garden. The next time the weather is nice and I have the chance, I plan to go to Sauvie Island and have a picnic. I have just the gift basket in mind to celebrate my first picnic of the year. I have been eyeing the Fruit & Gourmet Delight basket for some time. It has everything I like:  pears, apples, oranges, cookies, pistachios, jalapeno jack cheese, crackers and tea. It also comes with a cheese knife and in a travel trunk that will remind me of my first picnic of 2010 all year long. I might even get the travel trunk personalized to say “Spring 2010”. The reminder will be especially helpful next winter, but I’m not ready to even think about next winter...
