Grandparents Day

I am embarrassed to admit that I haven’t been good about celebrating Grandparent’s Day in the past. I talk to my one surviving grandparent every week, but when it comes to actually acknowledging her on this holiday I always forget. But as time goes by and my Nana gets older, I realize even more how important it is for me to take every opportunity I can to let her know how special she is to me. This Grandparent’s Day, September 9, my Nana will not only be getting a call from me, she will be getting one of GiftTree’s personalized gifts. GiftTree has some amazing gifts that any grandparent is sure to enjoy. If your Nana or Grandma is anything like mine, they love tea and would be overjoyed to receive one of our many tea gifts, such as our Traditional Teatime Basket or Rose Tea Set. If they have a sweet tooth our Sweet Surprise Cookie Trio, full of fresh baked favorites, makes for a tasty treat, or if they have to stay away from sweets send them our Sugar Free Gift Basket.  We also have many wonderful balloon, flower, and personalized gift options, like our Engravable Wind Chimes. Back to School!

Every morning on my way to work I’m reminded, as the sun is taking longer and longer to rise, that summer is on the way out. For some this just means an end to water-sports, barbecues, and picnics. But for many, the end of summer ushers in the beginning of a new school year- complete with shopping for school supplies and new clothes. Although GiftTree doesn’t sell new jeans or sneakers, we’ve got you covered with school supplies for any student. For starters, the Engraved Butoni Pen would make a great gift for a student at any age. As one customer said after giving one to her niece “she loved that she received such a grown up gift. She won’t let anyone else use her ‘special pen.” Or for something truly unique, you can leave your mark with a Graphite Quill designed by San Francisco artist Agelio Batle. Of course neither of these would be of any use without something to write on. Alas, GiftTree has thought of it all- our Fine Leather Journal with Free Embossing offers 192 pages ready to jot down any list, doodle, note, or idea. And it’s portability makes it perfect for any student- from elementary school to college. Or maybe you know someone who, like me, can’t stop drawing on things. Fear not! GiftTree’s Inspirational Pencil Set with Free Embossing will keep your walls free of doodles with the refillable spiral sketch pad and rainbow of colored pencils all bound in an embossed leather case. However, there may be a bookworm in your life who simply doesn’t write much or draw, but instead...

For the Love of Coffee…

I don’t know about you, but I do not feel quite awake in the mornings until my first cup of coffee. Growing up, I remember my Mom would always make coffee and once I became a teenager, she’d let me have a cup every now and then. Of course back then, in order for it to taste good to my taste buds, I had to add a pound or two of sugar in the cup along with a gallon or so of half n half creamer. 🙂 Nowadays, I still like my coffee with a spoonful of sugar and a smidge of cream, but I’ve become pretty picky in the coffee I drink… not to mention I like it STRONG. Since most of my friends and family are coffee drinkers as well, I know that any one of them would appreciate the gift of coffee – especially in form of this awesome basket, For the Love of Coffee. Delicious espresso, gourmet coffee, cookies, biscotti and other delicious treats make this a great gift! Fun Coffee Facts: 91% of coffee consumed is taken at breakfast. 52% of coffee drinkers would rather go without a shower in the morning than give up coffee. 72% of coffee drinkers take their coffee with dairy or non-dairy creamer, which means 28% drink their coffee black. Many consider espresso as the strongest form of coffee. From a caffeine perspective, however, espresso actually has about 1/3 the caffeine content as regularly brewed coffee. The average Starbucks customer visits the store 6 times per month while a loyal 20% of customers go to the stores 16 times...

You Deserve a Gift Basket, O Maker of Gift Baskets

This poem was written for us by Scott Poole after he accompanied us on GiftTree’s white water rafting trip. Scott is the House Poet for LiveWire! Radio variety show in Portland, OR.   I want to give a gift basket to you. You deserve it, for your kindness, for your smiles for your friendship… Well, not a basket exactly because that has a hint of Easter to it. Then I would have to buy that horrible, toxic plastic green Easter grass to fill it. It’s hard crinkly corners get everywhere, in the couch, stuck to that cat, falling out of your underwear at work. I think instead, I want to give you a gift box, something simple and wooden, with a mysterious black velvet pull cord coming from the top. I’m thinking when someone pulls the cord, the box explodes into a giant rubber raft. It explode with laughter, like GiftTree, and it would also explode with life jackets, helmets, paddles, IT guys with cases of beer, a tour bus and soaring mountains dressed in long bridal waterfalls bathed in champagne mist. However, that might cost approximately 735,000 dollars and it would probably take about three years for delivery. So maybe I should buy you something simpler, like a gift wetsuit you can wear.  You receive the wetsuit inside-out, and when you pull it the right way, all the food is revealed stuck to it. It comes with wine, cheese, crackers and various tasty herb dips. You’ll be the hit of the party as you walk around looking like a hip Jacques Cousteau with a Martini as people sample...

Glass Pen and Ink Set

I love all of the gifts we offer at GiftTree, but if I had to choose my favorites it would be our gifts that were inspired by Old-World designs, techniques, and styles. The Graphite Quill, Mobius Love Pendant, Fine Leather Journal, and our new product the Glass Pen and Ink Set are perfect examples. In particular, the Glass Pen and Ink Set takes us back to Renaissance days when bottles of ink and styluses were used to relay your sentiments. You can imagine someone like William Shakespeare sitting at his desk working tirelessly on one of his famous plays, dipping his quill feverously into the ink as he works well into the waking hours. Just the sight of this beautiful gift invokes romance, adventure, and eloquence—just like one of Shakespeare’s plays. The gift comes with two hand-blown glass styluses, six different ink colors in wax sealed bottles, and arrives in a lovely storage box.  It really is the perfect gift for any occasion, and who knows, maybe one of these sets will be used to create the next written...

I scream, you scream…

If I could get away with it, I would eat ice cream (or other frozen treats) just about every day. Unfortunately my waist line just isn’t on board with that plan. When we were kids, there was this ice cream parlor, “Roses” down the road from my cousins house that had the best ice cream in the world. Well, maybe it wasn’t the BEST, but it was good. My Aunt would let us match socks for nickels (it may not sound like much, but she literally always had 2 laundry baskets full) and with the money we made from that we would skip off down the street and get our sugar fix. Those are some of my favorite times with my cousins and the other kids on 45th, hanging out at Rose’s, eating cinnamon & sugar ice cream and feeling cool that we actually knew the guys behind the counter. As an adult, my ice cream experiences are a little different. I don’t often go to an ice cream parlor, rather enjoy a little something at home with someone special in a fun little number like this . Who says that just because I didn’t match socks to earn this treat, it can’t still be fun! Top 5 Favorite Frozen Treats: 1. Dole Whip 2. Soft serve in Cascade Locks 3. Frozen Custard in Mobile, Alabama 4. Tillamook chocolate peanut butter ice cream 5. Arabic ice cream with...

Summer Fun Facts

Summer is by far my favorite season. I am a sun goddess, so you won’t catch me complaining about the heat, or sitting in an air conditioned home. I am outside as much as I can, covered head-to-toe in SPF 50 of course, even during record heat waves. Besides loving the heat, I love all of the food and activities that go along with warm weather. Frisbee, ice cream, swimming, these are staples of summer, but do you actually know the history behind these things? Here are some fun summer facts that might just surprise you. Did you know that watermelon is actually a vegetable not a fruit? It is most closely related to cucumbers, pumpkins and squash, and is from the botanical family Cucurbitaceae. In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson invented the first popsicle. He created it completely by accident. Frank accidentally left a mixture of powdered soda and water, with a stirring stick, on his porch. He awoke the next morning and found a frozen pop! He first named his frozen pop an “Epsicle”, but when he got older his kids asked for “Pop’s” sicle and the new name was born. The average American eats around 5 1/2 gallons of ice cream a year, more than any other nationality. The late President Reagan declared July National Ice Cream month. It is also the month the most ice cream is sold. The frisbee was originally designed as a tin pie plate in the 1870’s. It was a marketing scheme to encourage homemakers to see the name “Frisbee” on the pie tin and think how much easier it would be to buy...

Make Your Wedding Gift Memorable

The big question when going to a wedding (aside from what to wear) is what sort of gift to buy the couple. We’ve all heard horror stories about the three identical toaster ovens. We want our gifts to our friends to be special, something they will actually use, and something that stands out so they will remember it came from you. These are a few things that would make great wedding gifts They say the one of the keys to a happy relationship is to never stop going on dates. Treat the couple to a series of dates with season tickets to the theater or their favorite sports team, or membership to a museum. A high-end bottle of wine or scotch to share on their first anniversary. You can even get the bottle engraved with their names and wedding date. Subscription to a quality wine of the month or coffee of the month club Forget the wedding – get them something o share on their honeymoon instead, like a gourmet gift basket or spa kit. Something customized to their interests. Do they love sushi or Thai? Why not a set of Engraved Chopsticks for Two? Most wedding gifts are domestic: kitchenware, linens, etc. A lot of younger couples are active and would love an excuse to get out of the house, so get them some camping/outdoor equipment or a set of luggage for the adventures they will have together. While money may seem impersonal, it really is one of the most appreciated wedding gifts. Many young couples are trying to save up for something; a house, a car, furniture,...

International Friendship Day

Just like how we have a day designated to celebrate mothers, fathers, grandparents and even your pets, there is also a special day chosen to honor our friendships. International Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday in August, so this year we will be giving a shout out to our BFFs on August 5. Here are some interesting facts about the “friendliest” holiday of the year: The tradition began in the United States back in 1935. Friendship day is celebrated world-wide, and is big in countries like India, Switzerland, and Paraguay. Winnie the Pooh is the designated world Ambassador of Friendship. Need some suggestions on how to celebrate Friendship Day? Send them a card expressing your appreciation. Send them flowers! Some of my favorites I would recommend are the “How Sweet It Is” bouquet, the “Bear Hug,” or the “Sunrise Sunset.” Make them a mixed cd of songs that remind you of the good times you’ve had. How about giving them a gift that represents how special friendships are like the “Mobius Pendant,” the “Friends are Like Stars” gift set, or one of our many gourmet food baskets, or personalized gifts. For more great gift ideas see our Friendship Day...

National Champagne Day

Like me, you probably didn’t think there were any holidays to celebrate in August. It is true there aren’t any “traditional” holidays, but there are a handful of fun occasions that are definitely worth celebrating. In August alone there is National Watermelon Day, National S’mores Day, Left Hander’s Day, World Youth Day, Friendship Day, and my personal favorite, National Champagne Day on August 4th. National Champagne Day is a relatively new holiday, but it has already become a great way to celebrate a time honored delicacy that goes all the way back to the 5th century. Many people celebrate the day with a champagne breakfast, brunch, or a lovely picnic. It is common to send a champagne gift to friends, colleagues, family, or clients, on this holiday. Gifts can range from the extravagant like our Cristal Champagne & Caviar Experience, to more basic like our Champagne & Confections. There are tons of choices, just make sure you save some for yourself! Featured Employee – Nicole Nebeker

Nicole is a busy-bee here at GiftTree. As a Customer Service Team Manager, her job is to help oversee the call center and make sure everything is running smoothly. Luckily for us, she was able to take a few minutes out of her day to answer some important questions! 1. What are your  favorite things to do during summertime? I love to be outside, barbecuing at the river or just stomping around with the kids. I like to take full advantage when it is not raining here in the Northwest! 2. What is your current fave GiftTree gift to give? It really depends. My little sisters love the cookies, but I always send the Metropolitan or the 5th Avenue when I want to impress someone! 3. Would you rather sing every word you speak OR always speak in rhymes? Definitely sing every word. I do this from time to time, and while I am a good writer I was never much of a poet. 4. What’s the best part of your job? I really like fixing things. Sometimes things go wrong, and making it right for a customer feels really good! A close second though, trashing my boss’ office. Because it’s funny. 5. If you were immortal for a day, what would you do? I think I would jump out of a plane or go diving in shark infested waters. Something I would never have the guts to do otherwise Here’s why we love Nicole… Nicole always has a positive attitude at work.  Her personality makes you instantly drawn to her… which is why she is so great at...

Top-Five Wedding Gifts

I have never been married myself, but I’ve had the pleasure of going to a lot of my friends’ weddings.  I’ve found through experience that giving the right present is difficult in this day-and-age when most couples getting married already live together and have everything they need for their home. The best thing you can do is give them something unique and thoughtful that they would never buy for themselves, and at GiftTree we have a lot of options that fit that description. Here are my “Top Five Favorite GiftTree Wedding Gifts”:  Engraved Chopsticks for Two: Talk about unique! I love these wooden chopsticks with free engraving. Get the couple’s names engraved on them for something really personal, or wish them good luck, fortune, success, etc. Engraved Toasting Flutes: A more obvious choice, but a good one. The flutes are silver-plated and engraved with the couple’s initials so they can remember their special day forever. Wedding Blessings Box: For the more eco-friendly couple, give them a gift that is truly from the heart. The Wedding Blessings Box is made from beautiful bamboo, comes with 20 recycled linen “blessed” notecards to write personal messages on, a bamboo pen, and other trinkets that express your blessings for the happy couple. Riedel Black Tie Decanter: If they are wine drinkers, they will love and truly appreciate this Riedel Black Tie Decanter. Made from the highest quality of crystal, and absolutely stunning to witness, this is a gift that will blow all others away. For a personalized touch, you can even add a message or their names on a satin ribbon. Champagne &...

Spanish Summer

Summer comes kind of late in the Pacific Northwest. It always feels like the season waits until the last minute to begin, and then condenses itself into a few brief weeks of sweltering heatwave after the 4th of July. When the sun finally comes out I love being able to keep the doors and windows open all day and night, letting the warm breeze and fresh summer scents flow through my house. What I love even more is heading outside to sit in the sun with a good book. On days like these I enjoy doing as little as possible, and the last thing I want to do when it’s a hundred degrees in the shade is cook a hot meal in the oven. I crave cold dishes: fruits, salads…popsicles! And one of my absolute favorite summertime things is Sangria. It’s light and refreshing and fruity, and goes perfectly with those cold summertime dishes. I’ve tried making it myself, but there’s something about the authenticity of real Spanish Sangria that just can’t be matched. That’s why the Spanish Sangria with Handmade Ceramic Pitcher is such a great summer gift! Not only is the Sangria genuine, it comes with a beautiful handcrafted pitcher made by Spanish artisans. Just add some fresh oranges and strawberries for a perfect summertime...

July Birth Flower

My beautiful baby girl is getting so big- on July 12th she is turning 4 years old! Gone are the days when I had to feed her by hand or get her dressed, my little firecracker is very independent and wants nothing more than to feel grown up. I decided that I am going to arrange her very first flower delivery on her birthday this year, so I started researching “birth flowers”. Apparently, like birth stones, there is a flower that corresponds to every month of the year. Perhaps this was a tradition created by florists, but it works! It just so happens that July’s birth flowers are the Water Lily and Larkspur. Now, I really don’t know where I can get water lilies for delivery, besides the Monet print hanging in the hall! But I do know about larkspur. What a beautiful delicate flower, that perfectly captures my little blondie’s kind spirit. I think we are going to splurge, and go for the Wonderful Day Bouquet. I can use it for a centerpiece at her party, and I know she will love the purple and pink flowers that so reflect her joyful heart.   Month Flower Symbolization January                     Snowdrop Love, fascination, and purity February                    Primrose Modesty, distinction, and virtue March                    Daffodil Rebirth, unrequited love, vanity April                    Daisy/Peony Innocence, loyal love, gratitude, and healing May        Hawthorn/Lily of the Valley Happiness, humility and sweetness June                     Rose Love, gratitude, appreciation July    Water Lily/Delphinium/Larkspur Joyful, fickleness, sweet August             Poppy/Gladiolus Moral Integrity September          Morning glory/Aster Daintiness, love, magic October         Marigold/Hops/Calendula Grief, Hopefulness, Grace...

A Family Friendly 4th of July

Now that I have an eight-month-old daughter this 4th of July is going to be much different than in past years. I used to look forward to the large celebrations, loud booming fireworks, and staying up way later than I probably should. Now I worry about the fireworks scaring my daughter, or even worse waking her up; I dread the crowded streets and people partying; and good luck getting me to stay up past 9pm. So I’ve decided to take the advice of my friends and throw my own child-friendly 4th of July party from the convenience of my own home. But where do I start? The best place to begin is with the décor. Nothing says Independence Day better than an America the Beautiful flower bouquet to use as a centerpiece for your table. And for outside, really impress them by hanging up Amazing Grace Wind Chimes that actually play the first six notes heard in the opening measures of the classic American hymn “Amazing Grace.” As far as food and drinks go, I love Sangria for a fun summer drink that is both light and tasty. Then if you really want to impress them, pair the Sangria with some delicious Maine Lobster Tails  that just melt in your mouth. And for dessert, end the night with some Cheesecake Pops that are fun for both the kids and adults. A perfect ending to a safe, quiet, and baby-friendly 4th of...

Why, Thank You!

A couple months ago I went on a road trip with my boyfriend. With gas prices, food and lodging, our trip was on a budget. We took the scenic route from Vancouver, WA into Nevada and ended up in San Diego before we made it back home. Our friends and family saved us several hundreds of dollars mainly in hotels alone not to mention food. When you’re trying to plan a road trip on a budget, or even any trip you take this summer remember to send a Thank You to those who fed or put a roof over your head. If you stay with a family member, a friend or even a friend of a friend. Tell them how much you appreciate them with a gift. Besides,  staying one night under someone else’s roof for free saved you at least $50! Here at Gift Tree we have numerous gifts under $50 that say “Thank you!” Take a look and send one...

It’s Summertime!

I love each season as it comes, but I really love summer. I look forward to it all year long! The long days, that big bright yellow thing in the sky comes out (if we are lucky!) and bare feet in the grass. One of my favorite summer activities is lounging in my parents backyard reading a good book, or playing a quick round of croquet. I especially love taking naps in the hammock.  Growing up everyone wanted to play in your yard because we had the biggest one on the block, or maybe it was because they knew my mom would have fresh baked cookies for us to chomp on… Regardless, our yard was the place to be in NE Portland. Be sure to take some time, kick off your shoes and put your feet in the grass. Top 5 Favorite Smells from Summers in My Parents Yard 1. Fresh cut grass 2. Camp Fire (fire pit) 3. Lilac trees 4. Charcoal Grill 5. Sheets drying on the clothes...

I Have the Best Dad Ever!!

I grew up a total Daddy’s girl. Wherever my dad was, I wasn’t far behind. I was supposed to have been his boy, but as fate would have it, it didn’t turn out that way. That didn’t seem to change the way we interacted however, I was his lil tom-boy. We went fishing together, chopped wood together, and as I got older, he taught me how to cook. That’s right I didn’t learn how to cook from my mom. Dad was the master cook and griller in our family, And still is today. So this fathers day, what better gift than the Fathers Day Gourmet Grill Basket! It’s perfect for the master griller in your life – with the assortment of gourmet spices and seasonings, and the gourmet cedar grilling planks he will surely be grillin up something tasty. Send your dad (or hubby, step dad, brother etc) something super special this year! Check out our unique gifts today and show him how much you truly appreciate him....
