Meet The GiftTree Team: President Martin McClanan

MEET THE PRESIDENT: MARTIN McCLANAN With professional experience in marketing and an insatiable passion for food and fine wine, Martin McClanan recently joined GiftTree as our new President. We sat down with Martin to gain some insight on his outlook for GiftTree, what gives him inspiration, and his expertise on the art of giving the perfect gift. What brought you to GiftTree? Tell us a little about your journey into the professional world of food & wine gifts.   I was lucky enough to work at an early pioneer restaurant in college called The Trellis in Williamsburg, VA.  There I learned about the importance of top-quality ingredients, and started to learn about wine from a very passionate group of people. I was so inspired by them that I decided to chart my career course into the wine business. I’ll always be grateful to Tom Powers, Marcel Desaulnier and John Curtis for teaching me about the joys and importance of real food and good wine. From there, I’ve had the good fortune of living and working in some great food towns including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and now Portland, OR, which continues to inspire me. My big project right now outside of work is as a board member of the James Beard Public Market in Portland. We are working to design, fund and build a permanent 7-day a week market in Portland as the epicenter of the Oregon/Washington food system.   What drives and inspires you most about GiftTree?   Gift giving is the most fun part of e-commerce.  If you can make it possible for someone to...

Memorial Day BBQ Recipe Ideas

Memorial Day is a special day to honor all of the Courageous women and men who have put their lives on the line for our Great Country. A great way to celebrate this day with friends and family is having them over for a BBQ with a perfectly planned meal. The perfect Memorial Day BBQ recipe is one of our favorite meals to make grilled salmon. Not only is it healthy, but when cooked properly, it will literally melt in your mouth. Below is a Memorial Day recipe to some of the best grilled salmon I have ever sampled. My personal preference is to serve it with wild rice and grilled asparagus, but any vegetable pairing will work.  Our featured wine- Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir is the ideal pairing with salmon. Since salmon is an oily fish, the acidity of a pinot noir helps to cut and balance the oiliness. The richness of Belle Glos combined with a delicious buttery salmon will leave your guests feeling awestruck. Author: adapted from the original recipe on allrecipes.com Recipe type: Entree Ingredients 1-3 salmon fillets, depending on size ¼ cup brown sugar 2 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp black pepper 2 tsp salt ¼ cup soy sauce ¼ cup olive oil ⅛ cup water 2-3 cloves minced garlic Instructions Purchase your salmon as fresh as you can. I prefer the taste of farm-raised to wild caught because I think it tastes less fishy. But don’t buy the frozen fillets if you can avoid it. Put the fish in a plastic bag with all the other ingredients and seal it with as much air pushed out as possible. Marinate...

Meet The GiftTree Team: Design Team Manager Heidi Reichert

Heidi Reichert is GiftTree’s talented, dynamic new Design Team Manager. She spearheads new gift designs, develops our line of luxury wines, sets the aesthetic tone for GiftTree, and keeps the Design Department organized and on schedule, which, when you’re working with a band of creative types, can be quite a task. We sat down with Heidi this week to gain some perspective on her background, her interests, and what inspires her the most. Tell us a little bit about your background in the design field. I studied Graphic Design at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, did some freelancing along the way and found my niche in stationery at Tiny Prints, where I worked for 7 years. Now I’m excited to be involved in the world of gifts! Who wouldn’t want to work with wine and chocolate on a daily basis?   Where do you draw your creative inspiration, and what inspires your artistic side? I draw a lot of my inspiration from fashion, architecture, fonts, and hand lettering.   Can you describe your personal style in a few words? I would describe my personal style as simple, organized, and clean.   Tell us a little bit about your family! My husband and I met and got married in San Francisco. Now we have two wonderful little ones, our daughter is 3 years old and our son is 6 months old.   What’s the one personal belonging you couldn’t live without? My Ray-Bans! And at this point in my life, the Baby Ergo (boring but true).   What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend? Every weekend I can be found...

Introducing Summer Chocolate Gifts

We’re Shipping Chocolate in the Summer!  You may have noticed that during the summer, chocolate doesn’t do so well in the hot sun. In years past, GiftTree wasn’t able to fulfill orders for shipping chocolate in summer months for that very reason. All that’s changing now, because this year the GiftTree team found a solution and we’re excited to announce that we will finally be able to start shipping chocolate in the summer! Our expert designers discovered new innovative food-safe gel ice packs that safeguard the chocolate during the shipping process. These ice packs are built to survive a hot shipping journey without melting or getting anything wet inside the gift. Long story short, we’re making sure this chocolate melts in your mouth, not in the mail. To go along with this exciting new capability, the team created a new line of summer chocolate gifts (and a re-vamped bestseller) that we’re sure you’re going to love. Check out these cool (pun-intended) new chocolate gifts!   The Godiva Chocolatier Collection One of GiftTree’s all-time bestselling gifts, and for great reason! A beautiful leather keepsake container holds a rich collection of award-winning chocolate confections from the world-renowned chocolatier Godiva.   The Premier Chocolate Collection Gift A striking gift box accentuated with elegant white and chocolate stripes is overflowing with an expertly curated selection of delicious gourmet chocolates from Ghirardelli, Lindt, Seattle Truffle Company and more. 4 Gifts for Nerds Who Have Everything

Think about it, we all have at least one friend that could be classified as a nerd. Someone who went to an Avengers midnight showing or who annually declares their love for their local Comic-Con. Well, the word “nerd” has evolved throughout the years. It may have been considered a derogatory term back in the day (never to this writer!), but nerd-culture has infiltrated nearly every interest. Nowadays, it is a title that many wear with a badge of honor! And heck, May 4 is even celebrated. “MAY the FOURTH be with you.” Get it? Some other examples of how nerdy we have become… HBO’s Game of Thrones, based upon a series of hardcore fantasy novels, is one of the biggest TV shows ever. Fantasy sports allows millions of fans to create their own teams, tinker with lineups and analyze stats. Which is super nerdy. I doubt anyone could watch the latest Star Wars episode 7 teaser and not feel a twinge of excitement! So what happens when you need to send a gift to a nerd? And what happens when that nerd has EVERYTHING already? Are there any nerd-specific gifts that may be appreciated more than others and not yet sitting on their desk? Absolutely! Find our top gifts for nerds who have everything, whichever type of nerd exists in your life, below!     The Sports Nerd Leather Bound Golf Log He feels the breeze caress his neck, blowing from east to west. Looking to confirm his suspicion, the golfing enthusiast bends down and picks out a few blades of grass. They initially resist his pull, but they finally give in....

Martin’s Musings: The Best Gift I Ever Gave

When I first started dating my (now) wife Liz, we had a bottle of Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque champagne on our first Valentine’s Day together. That was fun, but not the point of this little story.  The fun part came when I took the bottle and had a glass blower turn it into a vase.  After a miniature research project, I found some Japanese white anemones to put in the vase.   Well, I must say the look on her face when I gave her the vase with flowers on our first anniversary gave me one of the best feelings of my gift giving life.  It is what you want, to be personal, thoughtful and connect with the person you love.  The only problem is that I set an impossible standard! Nonetheless, this feeling is the inspiration for our Perrier-Jouët Luxury Collection this spring at GiftTree.   For mothers, lovers or people to whom you just want to send something beautiful, it will make quite the connection.   The history of the flower bottle is pretty interesting.  Henri Gallice was the owner of the champagne house in 1902 when he commissioned the artist Émile Gallé  to upgrade the packaging at Perrier-Jouët.  Oddly enough, the reaction from those who he showed it to was tepid, and he chose not to have it put into production.  Happily though, they stumbled upon a few bottles in 1964 and realized how beautiful the design was.  With much fanfare, they produced their first edition of Belle Époque a few years later to celebrate the 70th birthday of Duke Ellington.  So, if you are looking for a way to enjoy...

Sad Loss of Vintner Joseph Phelps

I had the good fortune to meet Joseph (Joe) Phelps a number of times.  He passed away on April 15th after an amazing life founding one of the premier wineries in Napa Valley.  His Insignia wine was one of the first wines that helped create the category of what is known as “cult wines” today.  It is still one of my favorite Meritage reds. Joe was a clear-thinking practical man full of positive energy, who made his first fortune in the construction business.  He took this and built his winery off Silverado Trail in Napa continuing to focus on earning a great reputation with quality vineyards and quality people to make his wines.  Silverado Trail winery has has a spectacular vista from their patio that you must see some day if you haven’t.  They did magical things with Cabernet Sauvignon, but also really had a wonder touch with Syrah.  They opened up Freestone in the Sonoma Coast a few years back to make Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which have also been nice achievements. The winery is in good hands with his son Bill, but it is a sad day to say farewell to such a good man.  If you have the fortune to open a bottle of Insignia in the future, raise a glass and toast the life and amazing winemaking of Joseph...
