4 Cheap Road Trip Ideas That Won’t Break The Bank

It’s summer time, and to me, summer means it’s time to go on road trips. Windows rolled down, radio turned up, and the destination planned out. The whole point of a road trip? The journey of getting there should be as fun as the destination! But what happens if you’re on a budget? Are cheap road trips even possible!? Fear not, fellow road trip fan! I have four great ways to go on a road trip without having to empty your bank account… 1. Drive Towards a National or State Park Clicking the above image will take you to the United States National Park Service website park finder, giving you an opportunity to find national parks around you. A great way to find state parks is by going to Google Maps and simply searching “state park.” Voila! I consider myself pretty well-versed when it comes to nature attractions and places to check out near me, but there are quite a few spots that pop up that sound amazing and that I’ve never heard of before! Pick a place a couple hours or more away and boom, awesome road trip. Plus, you don’t tend to spend a lot of money at state parks. You may need to purchase a pass or pay for parking, but the wonder of nature is absolutely worth the price. 2. Find a Legendary Food Spot I’m a sucker for really good granola. And I’ve heard great things about Marge Granola. So, I took a look on their website about their locations to purchase their granola and stumbled across a fun sounding place called Darvill’s Bookstore...

The Ultimate Summer Picnic Planning Guide

Summer picnics are pretty much inherently fun no matter what – gather some friends and food, plop down a blanket on a grassy patch on a sunny summer day and let the good times roll. But, with a little more forethought and effort, it’s not hard to turn a good picnic into the ultimate picnic. You won’t want to go back to your old picnics after you put some of the ideas in our summer picnic planning guide into practice:     Keep the bugs at bay Nothing ruins a picnic faster than the annoying buzz of flies and mosquitos flying overhead, especially when they bite! Keep flies away with this simple trick using just a few household items you already have. Make a DIY natural bug repellent, or try one of these other budget-friendly ways to keep bugs at bay.       Invest in a huge blanket, and make sure it’s one that stays dry. Nothing’s worse than a damp behind while trying to enjoy delicious food outside so think ahead to make sure you avoid this unfortunate situation. A great option is a blanket that’s soft on one side, and lined with waterproof material on the other. Or, you can DIY your own solution by laying down a shower curtain liner or tarp beneath the blanket.  Do this, and your soggy butt nightmares will dry up and disappear forever.       Serve smart food Minimize messes and awkward eating situations by serving food that’s super easy to pick up and handle while sitting cross-legged on a blanket. Just say no to balancing a precariously perched paper plate filled with...

A Meat Cheat Sheet: Charcuterie

Lately, the popularity of charcuterie is taking the U.S. food scene by storm. This old-is-new again trend of bringing a sustainable nose-to-tail approach to cuisine can now be found on menus all over the country – from hand-made pâtés to house-cured prosciuttos hanging from the rafters. So, the time is now to up your knowledge game by learning some facts about this delicious way to prepare meats, and about some of the most common and popular forms of charcuterie that you might encounter on your next happy hour menu. Think you already know all that you need to know about charcuterie? Take our Quiz & Prove it. Then, share your results and compete with your friends! Bite Into Some Fun, Meaty Facts: Definition: Charcuterie (/ʃɑrˌkuːtəˈriː/ or /ʃɑrˈkuːtəri/; northern French: [ʃaʁkytˈʁi] or southern French: [ʃaʁkytəˈʁi], from chair ‘flesh’ and cuit ‘cooked’) is the branch of cooking devoted to prepared meat products, such as bacon, ham, sausage, terrines, galantines, ballotines, pâtés, and confit, primarily from pork. Charcuterie may also refer to a store selling such products.   Charcuterie actually only refers to meats, not cheeses.  This can be confusing since cheese is often displayed alongside it on plates and boards, but make sure when referring to the delicious charcuterie you don’t accidentally refer to the camembert.   The process of making charcuterie doesn’t necessarily require cooking.  Many forms of sausages, bacons and ham products are preserved not by cooking, but by a process called curing. Curing involves salt, nitrates, nitrite or sugar to draw moisture from the meat, thus preventing it from spoiling. Many curing processes also involve smoking, spicing, or occasionally, cooking in addition to curing. Cured meats...

Meet the Lovable Dogs of GiftTree

There are many great things about working at GiftTree, such as helping people give great gifts on special occasions, working with a great group of co-workers, getting to sample the delicious food and beverages that go into our awesome gift baskets and many other things. However, one of my favorite parts of the day is getting to see all the dogs that come to work. Having a dog friendly work place can lead to some interesting situations, but overall it is great to have some furry friends around. Here’s a photo collage with some of the lovable dogs of GiftTree. Not all of these dogs come to work on a daily basis and some haven’t had the chance to come in at all. At GiftTree’s headquarters in Vancouver, Washington, there are a handful who come in on a regular basis. It’s probably a good thing they don’t all come in, because we’d all go broke from buying so many dog treats! Click the image for a full size...
