Learn All About It: Northwest Grapes

While the Portland area (home of GiftTree headquarters and Customer Service) may be better known for beer culture, the greater Pacific Northwest is a mecca for wine lovers. You can find wineries from the Applegate Valley in Southern Oregon all the way up to the Puget Sound region in Washington (and even up into British Columbia). A few of the well known wine growing regions are the Willamette Valley in Oregon, the Yakima Valley in Washington and the Columbia Valley located in both states along the mighty Columbia River. Over the past few decades the wine industry in the region has grown enormously and now has a huge economic impact. During this time of year, the grapes are beginning to really ripen and the vineyards are getting prepped for the harvest, here is a bit of info about wine in the northwest.   Two factors that make the Northwest so conducive to growing grapes are the rich soils and the plentiful summer sun. This may surprise some people, as the Pacific Northwest is well known for rain and lots of it, however summers are usually fairly dry and the latitude makes for long hours of sunlight. Sometimes it even get’s quite hot, as evidenced this summer with many days getting close to 100° in the Portland area, and a few that went over. The weather and landscape are slightly different the farther east you go, as things really dry out once you get past the Cascade Range. The change from the commonly held idea of the Pacific Northwest (lots of rain, green trees and waterfalls) is quite dramatic when...

Tips for a Smooth Back to School Transition

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, It’s that time of year again. In just a few short weeks, school will be back in session. The end of summer can be bittersweet for both parents and little ones. Children can be nervous about their first day, meeting their new teacher or making friends. In place of the first day rush around, how about switching gears and shaking up the traditional school routine? Below we have some tips for a smoother back to school transition.   How about trying on for size some innovative ideas that will involve both parent and child? Such as having a Back to School Breakfast or Dinner, complete with their favorite items. For my children they love chocolate chip pancakes with maple syrup. For many children preparing their favorite meals will not only nourish them, but also provide much needed comfort for the new challenge that awaits.           Another suggestion is to try out the School Supply Scavenger Hunt. It will not only help the kiddos to become responsible with their supplies but, also take ownership of their materials. Create a map or theme to make the experience more enjoyable for your kids. Remember to keep it lighthearted and relative to the child’s age.             Or how about having a bright bouquet of 1st Day of School Balloons or perhaps a small bright plant that children may help to grow throughout the school year? Let your kids know this is a celebration of new beginnings, as they are about to meet new friends and create lasting memories....

Decked-Out Summer Cocktail Recipes

It’s hard to believe that before long we’ll be closing up the windows, adding another layer of clothing, and bracing for the chill of Fall. But not yet! Here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re clinging to these last summer days with the desperation of kids about to start a new school year. It’s been an unseasonably hot summer but we’re still going strong and braving the heat with backyard parties, bonfires and barbeques. And of course, no hot weather get-together would be complete without icy summer cocktails to keep us cool. Having been to my fair share of sunny backyard gatherings this July and August, I thought I’d share a few memorable summer cocktail recipes to help you beat the heat and keep summer in full swing in your neck of the woods, too.   White Ginger Punch 4 oz. white wine 3 oz. ginger beer 1-2 dashes bitters Crushed fresh ginger This white wine based cocktail is the perfect summer blend of effervescent, tart and sweet, and is simple to create. Crush a dab of fresh ginger at the bottom of your shaker, combine the rest of the ingredients and pour over ice! Here’s an idea: why not try crafting your very own bitters to change the flavor profile? Our Craft Your Own Bitters Kit makes it easy to switch up the aromas and essences in your favorite cocktails.   Lemon Thyme Gin Sparkler 1 oz. gin 4 oz. club soda Juice of ½ lemon Dash of simple syrup Fresh thyme with add’l for garnish. Take advantage of the season’s fresh herbs and try this gin cocktail infused...

How Do You Survive Shipping Chocolate in the Summer? Send a GiftTree Chocolate Gift!

There’s a reason M&M’s trumpet the slogan “Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.” Nobody wants delicious chocolate to melt anywhere but on their tastebuds. So, what happens if you want to send your chocolate-loving Nana a gift during the summer months? You shouldn’t expect her to receive a soggy chocolatey box on her doorstep. This is precisely the reason why GiftTree has introduced an innovative new way of packaging chocolate during summer. GiftTree summer chocolate packaging contains the most-viable formula to keep chocolate cool during the heat: proper insulation and ice packs. Sun-Proof Insulation The first rule of keeping chocolate cool during summer shipment? Keep the sun out! GiftTree chocolate gifts are insulated with a sustainable and recyclable temperature-sensitive packing solution. Biodegradable and compostable, this insulation layer is wrapped in a half-inch thick white poly film built for durability and to withstand the heat and sun. In addition, this white poly film includes perforations for the benefit of moisture-absorbency, minimizing any effects of possible condensation. Ice Packs for Maximum Cooling Not simply content with keeping the sun and heat out, GiftTree packs the arctic coolness inside the box for chocolate gifts. Sweat-resistant gel packs are included in each gift, the precise number depending on the size and shape of the chocolate gift. The good news is that any number of non-toxic, reusable, and durable ice packs create a “freezer effect” for the gift. And Now, the Moment You’ve All Been Waiting For… Let’s take a look at some of the most decadent, most luscious and most mouth-watering summer chocolate gifts (that won’t melt during summer delivery!) GiftTree...
