Why We Gift Wednesday – Co-Worker Edition

Welcome to Why We Gift Wednesday! Each week, we celebrate one of the thousands of reasons that we truly love giving. Whether it’s honoring the relationships that we have, feeling grateful for an occasion or a special time of year, or relishing life’s simple joys, Why We Gift Wednesday is all about giving and generosity – the expression of appreciation for life’s many happy moments. On this Why We Gift Wednesday, we’re celebrating co-workers! Once in awhile, fate smiles upon us and we’re placed next to just the person that we needed. A great co-worker is a thing of beauty – someone who shares your joys and frustrations, supports and encourages you, and always motivates you to do your very best. When you’re having a rough day, it’s such a relief to be surrounded by people in the office who make the effort to understand and empathize with you, and try to figure out how to help you turn this day around. While having a wonderful co-worker is definitely a blessing, it’s important to remember that in order to have great co-workers, you have to be one, too. So turn that pointer finger inward and do some cross-examination: are you a source of motivation, inspiration, productivity and optimism around the office? It’s not always easy to do, especially when you’re having a bad day yourself. But a little happiness, encouragement and positivity can go a really long way. Is there a co-worker in your life that you want to thank for everything they do? How about a co-worker that you’d like to clear the air with, and maybe start over with...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – Wildly Delicious

Welcome to Friday’s Featured Artisan! Each week, we focus on one of the many talented individuals and companies whose perfect products are proudly featured in GiftTree gifts. It may be a master chocolatier, a gourmet cheesemonger, a winemaker or a talented artist – GiftTree is here to connect their meaningful stories to the discovery of your next great gifting moment. This Friday’s Featured Artisan, Wildly Delicious, has been masterfully experimenting with fine food for over 20 years. In the early 90s, Austin and Michelle Muscat created their first infused oils and vinegars inside their kitchen in Toronto, Ontario. At that time they hadn’t the slightest inkling that they were starting their very own brand, but it’s that same culinary innovation and drive for success that became Wildly Delicious Fine Foods, a leader in the gourmet specialty food market. With dozens of varieties of sauces, dips, oils, tapenades, jams, vinegars, salts and spice mixtures in countless delicious flavor combinations, Wildly Delicious has become a globally recognized brand in the culinary world. They describe their philosophy as “one very simple idea: the idea that sharing a meal with friends, a colleague or your family builds memories. Food is the connective fabric that binds us all. Think back to special events in your life. Whether it was a celebration, a holiday meal or even a lunch you shared with a long lost friend. More often than not, you remember something about the meal you had. It could be something as simple as your aunt’s mashed potatoes, your mom’s brisket, your dad’s steaks or that banquet hall’s rubbery chicken. Smell, taste, color, texture – these are all...

Our Favorite Cheeses From Around the Globe

Every year, Americans eat about 30 pounds of cheese, and if you’re French, it’s closer to 50. For us cheese lovers, the word “love” doesn’t quite go far enough to describe our passion and devotion to cheese. Whether it’s oozing out of a sandwich, melting on a nacho, piled high on pizza or sliced on its own, cheese is probably the most important culinary creation in the history of the world. Cheese is an actually an ancient food, whose origins predate recorded history. There is no conclusive evidence indicating where cheese-making originated,  but most believe it was invented in Europe. Either way, the practice became a sophisticated enterprise by the time the Roman Empire came into being. Let’s face facts: cheese is necessary for the continued survival of the human race, and here at GiftTree, we know that great cheese can come from nearly every part of the globe. We thought we’d share a few of our favorite cheeses – their countries of origin and their tasting notes – from some of the many fabulous Gourmet Cheese Gifts offered on GiftTree.com. Onward! France – Spain – Andorra: P’tit Basque Though it may have a similar rind and an area of origin with the better known Manchego, P’tit Basque is a sheep’s milk beauty entirely its own. Succulent and creamy with a smooth, inviting paste, P’tit Basque is aged 70 days, making it less gamey and more approachable than many of its more “sheepy” brethren. Which is not to say it’s simple; roasted nuts, stone fruit, and a subtle note of caramelized creme brulee shell all offer themselves to the attentive palate in a robust slice of this...

Why We Gift Wednesday (Autumn Harvest Edition)

Welcome to Why We Gift Wednesday! Each week, we celebrate one of the thousands of reasons that we truly love giving. Whether it’s honoring the relationships that we have, feeling grateful for an occasion or a special time of year, or relishing life’s simple joys, Why We Gift Wednesday is all about giving and generosity – the expression of appreciation for life’s many happy moments. This Why We Gift Wednesday, we’re celebrating the Autumn harvest season. It’s the serene hush before winter – this perfect time of year where the air turns crisp and cool, the leaves begin to blush and change color, and the golden sunlight is simply magical. The mornings are cold and misty, apples and pumpkins reach the peak of perfection, and leaves lay on the ground in brightly-hued piles, simply begging for children to jump in (and who could resist, anyway? It’s a rite of childhood passage). The summer clothes are packed away – tank tops and swimsuits are replaced with sweaters and stocking caps, while cozy boots take the place of flip-flops. Iced tea becomes pumpkin spice latte, summer vacation memories are put into the photo albums, and the planning begins for the upcoming holidays – first Halloween, then Thanksgiving. Baseball draws to an exciting close, and football season is well underway – there are so many reasons that we absolutely love Fall, but the biggest reason is that Autumn simply brings us together! Families sit around the Thanksgiving table, children get together to go trick-or-treating and count their candy, friends gather around the living room to cheer on their team… no matter what events draw you nearer to your loved...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – Argyle Winery

Welcome to Friday’s Featured Artisan! Each week, we focus on one of the many talented individuals and companies whose perfect products are proudly featured in GiftTree gifts. It may be a master chocolatier, a gourmet cheesemonger or a talented artist – GiftTree is here to connect their meaningful stories to the discovery of your next great gifting moment. In 1987, winemakers Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, inhabiting an old hazelnut orchard that was ideal for planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapevines. Named Oregon’s Premier Winery in 2000 by Wine Spectator, Friday’s Featured Artisan Argyle Winery has produced world-class sparkling wine, barrel-fermented Chardonnay and critically acclaimed Pinot Noir from these same late-season, low-yielding vines on its cool Dundee Hills slopes. The winery is made up of three different vineyards: Knudsen, Lone Star, and Spirit Hill, each over 100 acres. The 120-acre Knudsen vineyard is located in the Dundee Hills and its high-elevation blocks are a key component to Argyle’s sparkling wines and Pinot Noir. These historic vines produce distinctive wines with ripe fruit flavors and earthy, spicy old vine character. The other, “younger” half of the vineyard features state-of-the-art viticulture: Old World clones planted in high density blocks on warm sites. The 160-acre Lone Star vineyard is home to the majority of Argyle’s Pinot Noir vines and is regarded as one of Oregon’s best Pinot Noir vineyards. Lone Star Pinot is characterized by big, intense black fruit flavors supported by a firm tannic structure, suggesting wines that will age very well. Their newest and largest vineyard, Spirit Hill, was purchased in 2007 and has 135 acres planted. This high-elevation site in the gusty...

Why We Gift Wednesday (Book Lover’s Edition)

Welcome to Why We Gift Wednesday! Each week, we celebrate one of the thousands of reasons that we truly love giving. Whether it’s honoring the relationships that we have, feeling grateful for an occasion or a special time of year, or relishing life’s simple joys, Why We Gift Wednesday is all about giving and generosity – the expression of appreciation for life’s many happy moments. This Why We Gift Wednesday, we’re celebrating book clubs and book lovers. There’s nothing as relaxing and fun as curling up with a book on a chilly day – a book that enraptures you a carries you off to another world for a little while. It might be an epic love story for the ages, an account of courage in the line of fire, or a coming-of-age tale of youth, but the fact of the matter is, lost in the pages of a good book is a great place to be. Irving Stone, author of the novel The Agony and the Ecstasy, once said “There are no faster or firmer friendships than those formed between people who love the same books”, and we couldn’t agree more! Getting together with hot tea or a glass of wine and some snacks, sitting in a comfy living room or around a table and raving about that plot twist, ranting about the protagonist or discussing each person’s interpretation of the symbolism in a great book is just a few of the things that make book clubs so fun. Ever thought about starting a book club? The American Library Association has a great website called I Love Libraries, and in it they’ve got a...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – Olli Salumeria

Welcome to Friday’s Featured Artisan! Each week, we focus on one of the many talented individuals and companies whose perfect products are proudly featured in GiftTree gifts. It may be a master chocolatier, a gourmet cheesemonger or a talented artist – GiftTree is here to connect their meaningful stories to the contents of your next great gift. Have you ever had a slice of prosciutto so perfect, so heavenly that it seemed to practically melt in your mouth? Friday’s Featured Artisan, Olli Salumeria, specializes in artisanal slow-cured meats based on original 160-year-old family recipes that were handed down over 4 generations to their founder, Oliviero “Olli” Colmignoli. Olli was working for the US subsidiary of a salumi manufacturer that had been founded in Italy by his grandfather. Even though the prosciutto made in the States was great, Olli always preferred to serve the imported Italian ham to his friends. The American version was of course made using the same equipment, using the same Italian recipes, but the big difference between the Italian factory and the factory in the states was the hams – the Italian ham was just better meat. In 2010, Olli’s friend Chip Vosmik made a proposal – he had recently read an article about a man who was having great success selling his pasture-raised pork to high-end restaurants in New York City, so Chip said, “If I get you some really good pasture-raised pork, could you make prosciutto as good as the stuff you guys make in Italy?” Olli replied, “Absolutely. In fact, I have often thought it would be pretty cool to do just that. Trust me, the difference will astound you!” The following...

Why We Gift Wednesday (Relationship Goals Edition)

Welcome to Why We Gift Wednesday! Each week, we celebrate one of the thousands of reasons that we truly love giving. Most likely, the couple you envy for having been together for years and years in seemingly smooth bliss has worked through disagreements,  learned which battles to choose and which to let go, discovered each other’s preferred communication style, and gone over what works and what doesn’t work so many times that they’re now experts at being with each other. Many times, those in happy relationships have a few key things they do to make sure that the peace is kept,...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – Cary’s of Oregon

Welcome to Friday’s Featured Artisan! Each week, we focus on one of the many talented individuals and companies whose perfect products are proudly featured in GiftTree gifts. It may be a master chocolatier, a gourmet cheesemonger or a talented artist – GiftTree is here to connect their meaningful stories to the contents of your next great gift. Friday’s Featured Artisan, Cary’s of Oregon, actually started out as a simple idea for a fun family activity! Cary’s Father-in-Law Raymond gave Cary, his wife Jan and their three daughters a simple recipe for English toffee and a big slab of marble, as he had learned that candy makers use marble to cool down candy after it’s cooked. So Cary and his family began making toffee together, and it quickly became a family tradition during the holidays – cooking it in the pots, spreading it out on the marble to cool, experimenting with different flavor combinations. They soon had so much toffee that they shared it with their friends, and the more they shared, the more everyone loved it and the requests for more toffee poured in! Soon, all the requests had Cary making big batches of toffee nearly every weekend, so it was just a matter of time before the family decided to start a business to distribute their delicious gourmet English toffee nationwide. In April of 2001, Cary’s of Oregon was open for business.  Cary’s mechanical engineering background came in handy, and with the help of some engineer friends, he developed a manufacturing line with some custom designs to improve efficiencies in producing larger batches of English toffee while maintaining the artisan quality of the family recipe....

Why We Gift Wednesday (A New Year of Learning Edition)

Welcome to Why We Gift Wednesday! Each week, we celebrate one of the thousands of reasons that we truly love giving. Whether it’s honoring the relationships that we have, feeling grateful for an occasion or a special time of year, or relishing life’s simple joys, Why We Gift Wednesday is all about giving and generosity – the expression of appreciation for life’s many happy moments. This Why We Gift Wednesday, we’re celebrating learning new things! The author Hermann Hesse once wrote, “I have always thirsted for knowledge; I have always been full of questions.” It’s truly wonderful to send our kids off to school, to a new classroom where they’ll expand the world around them, gain knowledge and explore ideas and concepts that will be totally new to them. As we send our kids off to school this year, it’s pretty much guaranteed that they’ll be coming home from school each day with more and more questions. Questions about what they learned that day, about how that is made or why this happens, and questions about the way the world works. Answering all these inquiries one after another might feel a little tiresome, but aren’t we so grateful for that insatiable thirst for knowledge?  It’s pretty amazing that right now, our kids are literally shaping the world around them with the knowledge they gain from their parents, teachers and adults around them. The next time your child asks you a question like “Why is it light out during the day, and dark at night?”, why not get a dialogue going? Ask them what they think! Hop online and look up the information together! There are tons of...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – La Maison Maille

Friday’s Featured Artisan, La Maison Maille, is a French producer of fine condiments, and heir to an enduring legacy left by the Parisian Antoine-Claude Maille. He was the proud chef behind 84 sublime mustards and 120 vinegars. In the mid-1700s, Antoine-Claude discovered the beneficial health-properties of vinegar. He is accredited with saving many of the residents of Marseilles during the plague with his “Vinegar of the Four Thieves”, a vinegar which he suggested should be swallowed by the teaspoonful and rubbed on to the palms of the hands. His son, also named Antoine-Claude, was named Master vinegar-maker in 1742, and five years later, he marketed his own line of fragrant mustards and opened a small shop on the rue Saint-André des Arts in Paris. His new celebrity named him the official supplier to King Louis XV, and La Maison Maille was established. Today, nearly 270 years later, the chefs at La Maison Maille continually create textures and flavors that are the direct result of centuries of expertise, passed down through generations. The tradition is kept alive by the team of experts who create the products today, carefully selecting their ingredients and preserving the excellence that defines La Maison Maille in a continual quest for innovation and perfection. Know-how, craftsmanship and the human touch contribute to the character and quality of products La Maison Maille – a line that includes vinegars, oils, delectable mustards and pickles. Here at GiftTree, we’re delighted to carry two of La Maison Maille’s delicious products in our Cheese and Charcuterie Gifts – their cornichons, petite pickled gherkins (a variety of cucumber) with a tart and mildly bittersweet flavor, traditionally served as a condiment with...

Pack a Lunchbox Your Kids Will Love

Now that school is getting back into session, it’s time to start getting back into the groove of packing that lunchbox every night (or morning). For us grown-ups, it can really seem like quite a mundane task that’s too time-consuming, or just plain old not worth the extra effort when there’s laundry, dinner, bills, soccer practice, chores and shopping to do. And when that happens, kids often come home with their lunchbox full of uneaten fruit, vegetables and sandwiches. So how do we pack a lunchbox that we can be sure our kids will not only gobble up, but enjoy, too? Here are five tips to pack a lunchbox your kids will love! 1. Give them the Power! Invite your kids to be involved in packing tomorrow’s lunch with you! Ask them what they’d like – carrots or cucumbers? Apples or orange slices? What flavor of jelly would they like with their peanut butter? The more you involve your child in the decision-making, the more they might feel that you care about their opinions, and you’re giving them a sense of empowerment, too.   2. Use those leftovers! Did dinner last night go off like gangbusters, with the kids cleaning their plates or asking for seconds? Send those leftovers along with them to school for lunch the next day! You heat up the leftovers in the morning and use a thermos to keep them warm until lunchtime.   3. Get a bento / divided lunchbox! There are so many benefits to using these lunch boxes with dividers! First, they pretty much eliminate the need for plastic baggies, foil and other unsustainable waste. Second, bento boxes just make the...

Meet the Team: Jordan Crittenden, Photographer

One look through GiftTree’s beautiful website and you’ll plainly see that all of our gifts are curated and photographed with a sleek, clean, streamlined aesthetic. This is thanks in part to our fabulous in-house photographer, Jordan Crittenden. Behind the scenes in our photo studio here in the lovely Pacific Northwest, Jordan works side-by-side with our stylist to capture our gifts at their very best. We sat down with Jordan to talk inspiration, creativity and a little bit of life, too. Onward! Tell us a little bit about where you grew up!  Jordan: I was born in Portland, Oregon, but grew up in Reno, Nevada. It’s been good to get out of the desert and come back to the Pacific Northwest. Where do your greatest passions lie? I struggle with that question every day. I’m into a lot of things – art, music, motorcycles… it’s impossible to choose. Where would we most likely find you on the weekends? On the weekends you’ll definitely find me around town, getting breakfast with friends. I really like breakfast. When did you know you wanted to work in photography?  I took my first photo class in high school and then continued on in college, that’s where I really got serious about it. What brought you to the Photography Studio at GiftTree? Tell us a little about your adventures! Our stylist and Catalog Producer, Amy! I met her through a mutual acquaintance, and when a job opened up at GiftTree to be photo editor, I took it. I became the main photographer two months later. What inspires you the most about working at GiftTree? I truly believe that inspiration...
