Friday’s Featured Artisan – Cary’s of Oregon

Welcome to Friday’s Featured Artisan! Each week, we focus on one of the many talented individuals and companies whose perfect products are proudly featured in GiftTree gifts. It may be a master chocolatier, a gourmet cheesemonger or a talented artist – GiftTree is here to connect their meaningful stories to the contents of your next great gift. Friday’s Featured Artisan, Cary’s of Oregon, actually started out as a simple idea for a fun family activity! Cary’s Father-in-Law Raymond gave Cary, his wife Jan and their three daughters a simple recipe for English toffee and a big slab of marble, as he had learned that candy makers use marble to cool down candy after it’s cooked. So Cary and his family began making toffee together, and it quickly became a family tradition during the holidays – cooking it in the pots, spreading it out on the marble to cool, experimenting with different flavor combinations. They soon had so much toffee that they shared it with their friends, and the more they shared, the more everyone loved it and the requests for more toffee poured in! Soon, all the requests had Cary making big batches of toffee nearly every weekend, so it was just a matter of time before the family decided to start a business to distribute their delicious gourmet English toffee nationwide. In April of 2001, Cary’s of Oregon was open for business.  Cary’s mechanical engineering background came in handy, and with the help of some engineer friends, he developed a manufacturing line with some custom designs to improve efficiencies in producing larger batches of English toffee while maintaining the artisan quality of the family recipe....

Why We Gift Wednesday (A New Year of Learning Edition)

Welcome to Why We Gift Wednesday! Each week, we celebrate one of the thousands of reasons that we truly love giving. Whether it’s honoring the relationships that we have, feeling grateful for an occasion or a special time of year, or relishing life’s simple joys, Why We Gift Wednesday is all about giving and generosity – the expression of appreciation for life’s many happy moments. This Why We Gift Wednesday, we’re celebrating learning new things! The author Hermann Hesse once wrote, “I have always thirsted for knowledge; I have always been full of questions.” It’s truly wonderful to send our kids off to school, to a new classroom where they’ll expand the world around them, gain knowledge and explore ideas and concepts that will be totally new to them. As we send our kids off to school this year, it’s pretty much guaranteed that they’ll be coming home from school each day with more and more questions. Questions about what they learned that day, about how that is made or why this happens, and questions about the way the world works. Answering all these inquiries one after another might feel a little tiresome, but aren’t we so grateful for that insatiable thirst for knowledge?  It’s pretty amazing that right now, our kids are literally shaping the world around them with the knowledge they gain from their parents, teachers and adults around them. The next time your child asks you a question like “Why is it light out during the day, and dark at night?”, why not get a dialogue going? Ask them what they think! Hop online and look up the information together! There are tons of...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – La Maison Maille

Friday’s Featured Artisan, La Maison Maille, is a French producer of fine condiments, and heir to an enduring legacy left by the Parisian Antoine-Claude Maille. He was the proud chef behind 84 sublime mustards and 120 vinegars. In the mid-1700s, Antoine-Claude discovered the beneficial health-properties of vinegar. He is accredited with saving many of the residents of Marseilles during the plague with his “Vinegar of the Four Thieves”, a vinegar which he suggested should be swallowed by the teaspoonful and rubbed on to the palms of the hands. His son, also named Antoine-Claude, was named Master vinegar-maker in 1742, and five years later, he marketed his own line of fragrant mustards and opened a small shop on the rue Saint-André des Arts in Paris. His new celebrity named him the official supplier to King Louis XV, and La Maison Maille was established. Today, nearly 270 years later, the chefs at La Maison Maille continually create textures and flavors that are the direct result of centuries of expertise, passed down through generations. The tradition is kept alive by the team of experts who create the products today, carefully selecting their ingredients and preserving the excellence that defines La Maison Maille in a continual quest for innovation and perfection. Know-how, craftsmanship and the human touch contribute to the character and quality of products La Maison Maille – a line that includes vinegars, oils, delectable mustards and pickles. Here at GiftTree, we’re delighted to carry two of La Maison Maille’s delicious products in our Cheese and Charcuterie Gifts – their cornichons, petite pickled gherkins (a variety of cucumber) with a tart and mildly bittersweet flavor, traditionally served as a condiment with...

Pack a Lunchbox Your Kids Will Love

Now that school is getting back into session, it’s time to start getting back into the groove of packing that lunchbox every night (or morning). For us grown-ups, it can really seem like quite a mundane task that’s too time-consuming, or just plain old not worth the extra effort when there’s laundry, dinner, bills, soccer practice, chores and shopping to do. And when that happens, kids often come home with their lunchbox full of uneaten fruit, vegetables and sandwiches. So how do we pack a lunchbox that we can be sure our kids will not only gobble up, but enjoy, too? Here are five tips to pack a lunchbox your kids will love! 1. Give them the Power! Invite your kids to be involved in packing tomorrow’s lunch with you! Ask them what they’d like – carrots or cucumbers? Apples or orange slices? What flavor of jelly would they like with their peanut butter? The more you involve your child in the decision-making, the more they might feel that you care about their opinions, and you’re giving them a sense of empowerment, too.   2. Use those leftovers! Did dinner last night go off like gangbusters, with the kids cleaning their plates or asking for seconds? Send those leftovers along with them to school for lunch the next day! You heat up the leftovers in the morning and use a thermos to keep them warm until lunchtime.   3. Get a bento / divided lunchbox! There are so many benefits to using these lunch boxes with dividers! First, they pretty much eliminate the need for plastic baggies, foil and other unsustainable waste. Second, bento boxes just make the...

Meet the Team: Jordan Crittenden, Photographer

One look through GiftTree’s beautiful website and you’ll plainly see that all of our gifts are curated and photographed with a sleek, clean, streamlined aesthetic. This is thanks in part to our fabulous in-house photographer, Jordan Crittenden. Behind the scenes in our photo studio here in the lovely Pacific Northwest, Jordan works side-by-side with our stylist to capture our gifts at their very best. We sat down with Jordan to talk inspiration, creativity and a little bit of life, too. Onward! Tell us a little bit about where you grew up!  Jordan: I was born in Portland, Oregon, but grew up in Reno, Nevada. It’s been good to get out of the desert and come back to the Pacific Northwest. Where do your greatest passions lie? I struggle with that question every day. I’m into a lot of things – art, music, motorcycles… it’s impossible to choose. Where would we most likely find you on the weekends? On the weekends you’ll definitely find me around town, getting breakfast with friends. I really like breakfast. When did you know you wanted to work in photography?  I took my first photo class in high school and then continued on in college, that’s where I really got serious about it. What brought you to the Photography Studio at GiftTree? Tell us a little about your adventures! Our stylist and Catalog Producer, Amy! I met her through a mutual acquaintance, and when a job opened up at GiftTree to be photo editor, I took it. I became the main photographer two months later. What inspires you the most about working at GiftTree? I truly believe that inspiration...

How to Open Wine Like a Pro

Have you ever been to a party or a restaurant where wine was being served, and just marveled at the cork-popping prowess of the person opening the bottle? Well, you can have the same opening skills as any experience oenophile with the right tools and a little bit of practice. Read on for our guide: How to Open Wine Like a Pro in five easy steps, and you’ll be the one smoothly and effortlessly opening a bottle of wine and impressing friends and family at your next dinner party. #1 Gather The Essential Tools Foil Cutter or Knife Many great wine openers come with a little fold out knife attached – use it to cut the foil on the top of the bottle in two clean half-circle cuts just above the lip, and remove the clean disc of foil from the top with the edge of the knife. Otherwise a handy foil cutter made just for this purpose really makes for a seamless edge on the bottle. Corkscrew A waiter’s wine key is the perfect option here for an effortless wine opening experience. These openers have two “steps” to them, one that you rest on the bottles edge to get the cork part way out of the bottle, and a second step to pop it fully out of the bottle. Friday’s Featured Artisan: Volpi Foods

The cornerstone of Friday’s Featured Artisan Volpi Foods’ success is its unparalleled dry cured meat. In 1898, John Volpi set sail for America from his hometown of Milan, Italy, bringing with him little more than a vision to utilize his craft and artisan skill. Having learned from his elders the ancient European art of dry curing, John had a plan to bring this centuries-old tradition across the ocean, supplying customers in America with his exquisite dry cured meats. In 1902, he opened the doors of Volpi Foods, a small store at the intersection of two dirt roads in a neighborhood in St. Louis known as The Hill. There, he created cacciatore— a seasoned, dried salami that was small enough to fit inside the pockets of the local clay miners. Cacciatore is a rich, bold, Hunter’s style salame, perfect for thick cut slices. He used only local ingredients and sought out only local suppliers, and dried the meats using the same method he’d learned in Italy: opening and shutting windows to control the temperature and humidity of the air that circulated throughout the room. The customer’s response to John’s exquisite craftsmanship was overwhelming. He soon added delicacies such as prosciutto, guanciale, pancetta, and coppa. Today, the Volpi storefront remains on the very same spot in St. Louis where John founded it and run by the very same family. For more than 110 years, Volpi Foods has been continually offering unique twists on the classic specialty foods—satisfying meat lovers’ discerning palates in ways that promise to change the landscape of the category. We at GiftTree absolutely love the sweet, spicy, luscious texture of Volpi’s dry cured Italian meats,...

Which Glass is Right for My Beer?

Summer is in full swing here at GiftTree HQ, and there’s nothing we enjoy more than an ice cold beer on a scorching hot day. There’s nothing wrong with drinking your golden brew straight from the can, but if you really want to take your beer game to the next level, you need only one thing: a frosty vessel. Why do you need a beer glass? BeerAdvocate explains it best: “As soon as the beer hits the glass, its color, aroma and taste is altered, your eye candy receptors tune in, and your anticipation is tweaked. Hidden nuances become more pronounced, colors shimmer, and the enjoyment of the beer simply becomes a better, more complete, experience.” (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/101/glassware/) Here are a few of our favorite glasses to get you started:     Pilsner: Tall, slender and tapered, this glass maintains the carbonation and hue of your beer while preserving its foamy head. Obviously a great glass for pilsners, but also a solid choice of barware for European beers like Doppelbocks, Schwarzbiers, or Witbiers.         Pint: The classic beer glass. The reason you’ll see this glass everywhere is because it is affordable, easy to store, and even easier to drink out of. This glass isn’t specialized, and can handle just about any type of beer you care to pour in it from an IPA to a Saison. If you enjoy beer as much as we do, pint glasses also make fun collectables!         Stein: These thick and sturdy glasses add gravitas to any home bar! Steins come in lots of fun shapes (think horns) and can come with or...

Friday’s Featured Artisan: Sartori Cheese

Friday’s Featured Artisan Sartori Cheese is a fourth generation, family owned and operated artisan cheesemaker with a passion for specialty cheeses and unique recipes that have been handed down for many generations. In the early 1900s, Paolo Sartori set off for America as an Italian immigrant aboard the Finlandia. While on board the steamship, he worked his way to the upper decks and struck up an unlikely friendship an Italian Count who started a cheese company in Minnesota, and invited Paolo to come and work for him. It was there that Paolo Sartori learned the business and art of cheesemaking, and in 1939, he moved to Wisconsin and started his own cheese company that is now simply known as Sartori Cheese. Today the company is in the hands of Paolo’s grandson Jim Sartori, and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2014. Sartori is most known for their BellaVitano, a cow’s milk Italian farmstead cheese with a nutty, fruity taste that’s also available in a number of different flavors including merlot, balsamic, raspberry and our personal favorite here at GiftTree, black pepper. Starting out like Parmesan, it has a creamy, rich texture with light fruity notes and a sweet and tangy finish. When you bite into a slice of BellaVitano, there’s a slight crunch that comes from calcium crystals that form as the cheese ages. GiftTree is proud to carry Sartori Black Pepper BellaVitano cheese in a number of our Artisan Cheese and Charcuterie gifts, and we hope you get a chance to indulge in this delicious cheese!...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – Plum Island Soap Company

Friday’s Featured Artisan Plum Island Soap Company was born out of its founder Michele Diodati’s passion for creating all-natural soaps and lotions for her own friends and family that were free of any chemicals or harmful ingredients. She mixed up recipes in her kitchen to cure her baby’s diaper rash and experimented with natural ingredients to relieve her own growing anxiety when reading labels on products in her cabinets. When Michele first started out, she sold her soaps at Farmers Markets in and around Boston as well as craft fairs throughout New England. She was sure to collect email addresses and contact info of the customers she met along the way, and kept in touch with them as the business grew. As it turned out, there were a lot of people out there who shared her concerns, and were also looking for natural spa and bath products. It’s these customers’ continued loyalty that have helped Plum Island Soap Company stay true to their path of purity. What started in the kitchen took over the living room, and shortly thereafter demanded the whole house and now, Plum Island Soap Company operates out of a little cottage on Plum Island, Massachusetts. This is the magical place where all the soapy, buttery goodness takes place. They make their products daily out of a little tiny shop, mixing and packaging their all-natural line. In some ways, they operate like a bakery, using similar equipment and making everything in small batches to ensure freshness and quality. From the very beginning, the mission was to create bath products using the purest, simplest ingredients, without using dyes, perfumes...
