Get Ready for World Cup Finals

Who’s been keeping up with the World Cup this year? There are only 7 games left until the final match, set to play on Sunday July 15th. Who do you think will take it? Will it be a European team, like Croatia, England, Belgium or France, the last remaining Nordic team, Sweden, one of the South American teams Uruguay or Brazil, or the host country, Russia? There is a lot of speculation going on these days, and a lot of people who have seen their teams eliminated (I’m still a little sad about Denmark) have moved on to rooting for one still standing (Heja Sverige! Go Sweden!). No matter who you’re rooting for, these next few weeks are going to be pretty darn exciting. If you’re hosting a Fifa World Cup Finals party, we’ve got some entertaining ideas and recipes (because let’s face it – it’s all about the FOOD!) to make your viewing party especially fun. To help you get ready for World Cup Finals, here are a few tips and recipes. IDEA #1: Charcuterie, Chocolate, Cheese Boards, Fruits and Vegetables — make big, shareable platters ahead of time! They’re easy to assemble, easy to pick at, carry lots of variety for your guests and aren’t totally distracting to eat. We recently saw an amazing idea on BBC’s Good Food Blog – the components on the platters created the flags of the competing countries. How cool is that? IDEA #2: Match the menu to the teams playing! A simple and cute idea is to match the regional cuisine of the teams playing to the food you serve. France? Warm...

July Birth Flower: Larkspur

Did you know that every birth month has its own flower, and each of those flowers has its own dedicated meaning? It’s believed that the Romans began this tradition as well as floriography, the language of flowers themselves. In general, the birth month flower is usually the plants that reach their peak blooming season during that month. With July being the first full month of summer, there are many many flowers in season right now, from hydrangea to daisies and sunflowers But July’s birth month flower is none other than larkspur. Standing tall and beautiful, larkspur belongs to the buttercup family and blooms in a vast array of colors from pink to white to blue. Larkspur is thought to have earned its name because of its blossom – every bloom contains an elongated petal that looks like a spur, presumably like the hind claws of a meadowlark. Larkspur flowers represent affection and laughter, a lightness of heart and a sweet disposition. If someone you know has a birthday in July, a bouquet containing larkspur is a perfect gift and a sentimental offering. GiftTree has a few gorgeous flower bouquets that are perfect for sending during July birthdays, such as our Pretty in Purple Bouquet, containing gorgeous larkspur in white and purple as well as lush lavender roses and seeded eucalyptus. Or send the Garden of Grace, with pink larkspur, spray roses and another blossom that is in its prime during the month of July, the hydrangea. The image on the header of this blog is the Wonderful Day Bouquet, a tall and lovely bouquet of larkspur, matsumoto asters, freesia, snapdragons and more....

Why We Gift Wednesday (Take a Break Edition)

Welcome to Why We Gift Wednesday! Each week, we celebrate one of the thousands of reasons that we truly love giving. Whether it’s honoring the relationships that we have, feeling grateful for an occasion or a special time of year, or relishing life’s simple joys, Why We Gift Wednesday is all about giving and generosity – the expression of appreciation for life’s many happy moments. When we take a walk through our neighborhoods in the summertime, we often see large garden plots that look absolutely perfect – neatly tilled rows, weeds cleared away, big happy zucchini plants splaying out every which way… so many home gardeners make it look totally easy to tend and grow a great garden. But the truth is, it takes a whole heap of work, both mental and physical. Even while it’s still during the winter, most home gardeners are already planning and preparing for the layout and schedule of this spring and summer’s garden. It’s good for the soil to not plant the same thing in the same area year after year, so most gardens tend to change. And the schedule varies greatly, region by region and plant by plant. Planning and scheduling a successful garden takes just as much brain power as it does physical labor. In April and May (and sometimes as early as March), we start to see those home gardeners head outside with their gloves, shovels, tillers, seeds and all the tools they need to start this year’s garden. All throughout the hot summer months they’re out there, too. For what seems like hours, home gardeners work away in the hot sun, turning over the soil...

Business Gifting: The Ground Rules

Whether you’re looking for ways to celebrate a company milestone, welcome or reward an employee, affirm your client relations or thank the customers who are essential to your company’s success, business gifts are the perfect way to honor the occasions and people who matter the most to your business. But for many business owners, professionals and executives, it’s important to know the ground rules of business gifting. 1. Familiarize Yourself with Your Company’s Gift Giving Policies. It may not be common knowledge, but there are both federal laws pertaining to corporate gifting, that vary by the industry or the reason for the gift. Companies put these laws into policies to make sure that they stay compliant with practice policies. So before you give any gift, confirm with your Human Resources Department and get a copy of your business’ policies on gifting. If there are monetary limits or restrictions you need to know, it can save some trouble down the line. 2. Give at the Right Time. Timing is everything, and knowing the best time to give your gift will always keep your company’s reputation in check. If you’re in the middle of contract negotiations, it is definitely not the right time to send a gift and risk your intentions being misinterpreted as a bribe. It’s always best to wait until any and all contracts are finalized – the the gift can’t be misconstrued as anything but a symbol of your appreciation. 3. Know Your Audience. Gifts that have been obviously selected at random look exactly that – randomly selected. Gift giving is just as much about you, the giver, as it is...

Throw the Perfect Outdoor Party

As the weather warms up and spring turns into summer, those balmy, breezy, perfect summer evenings just beg for get-togethers in backyards and on patios all over the country. Whether you’re firing up the grill, mixing cocktails, putting together the perfect salad or just relaxing with friends in the lounge chairs, it doesn’t take much to throw the perfect outdoor party. Here are a few of our best tips and ideas for making your next patio party one for the record books. 1. Let your guests know what to expect! The best parties are the ones that are the most prepared-for. Write your invitations in a way that makes it clear what your guests can look forward to. “The grill will be firing from 5 – 6pm!” “We’ll supply the food – bring whatever you’d like to drink!” “Flip flops and sunglasses welcome!” All of these cutesy little phrases let your guests know what to expect – that the food will be served at 5pm, it’s BYOB, and flip flops and sunglasses mean it’s a casual dress code. There are tons of examples online for backyard party invitations – find what works for you and tailor it to your own details. 2. Anticipate mosquitoes, bugs and flies. It’s just that time of year! Swatting mosquitoes and batting flies away from our food is a part of summertime life, but there are ways you can make it easier on you and your guests. One of the most important things you can do to your backyard (and this stands whether you’re having a party or not) is to ensure there is never any standing water...

Friday’s Featured Artisan – Kopper’s Chocolate

Welcome to Friday’s Featured Artisan! Each week, we focus on one of the many talented individuals and companies whose perfect products are proudly featured in GiftTree gifts. It may be a master chocolatier, a gourmet cheesemonger or a talented artist – GiftTree is here to connect their meaningful stories to the discovery of your next great gifting moment. Kopper’s Chocolate was founded by Fred “Pappi” stern who fled Nazi Germany with his family. Fred partnered with David Kopper, a European chocolatier, to combine old world chocolate sophistication with new world confectionary innovation. Kopper’s was the first company in the United States to combine chocolate and coffee and to make chocolate lentils (m&ms would follow).  And while the rest of the country was consuming milk chocolate, Kopper’s pioneered the market for high quality dark chocolate, setting the stage to become one of the world’s best chocolate panners. For more than 80 years, Kopper’s chocolates such as cordials, are still proudly made by hand in small batches at their New Jersey headquarters. GiftTree is a proud partner of Kopper’s Chocolate, and we’re delighted to offer two exclusively curated gifts to our chocolate collection – the Chocolate Espresso Bean Collection, with six varieties of robust espresso beans enrobed in rich chocolate, and the Cocktail Hour Chocolate Cordials Collection – a tasting menu of six chocolate liqueurs including rum, blackberry brandy, amaretto and Champagne. The GiftTree Guide to Wine and Cheese Pairing

Get ready – next Monday June 4th is National Cheese Day – that perfect day devoted to cheese lovers. But if you’re anything like us here at GiftTree, the word “love” doesn’t quite suffice for our passion and devotion to the dairy delicacy. In the United States, Americans eat an average amount of 30 pounds of cheese a year (can you believe that? I can.), but of course the French have us beat at 50 pounds per year. We love cheese oozing out of a grilled cheese sandwich, piled high on pizza, melted on the perfect nacho… but today we’re setting the bar higher and talking about cheese’s ultimate companion – wine. The worlds of both wine and cheese are intricate, complex and storied, to say the least. There are so many varieties of wine, and even more types of cheese out there, so it can be tough to know what wine is going to be the best companion to this or that particular type of cheese. Behold The GiftTree Guide to Wine and Cheese Pairing! Using this simple guide, you too can match the flavors on your cheeseboard to the wine in your glass and make some palate magic. We’ll start with popular varietals of wine and build from there – keep checking this blog post as more pairing ideas are added. Onward! White Wines Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Riesling – the creamy vanilla and buttered toast aromas and flavors of Chardonnay pair perfectly with light-colored, surface-ripened soft cheeses. Even if your Chardonnay is unoaked and possesses more brightness than that of the oaked varietal, it’s good to know...
