At GiftTree we strive to make each interaction that you have with us distinctive and memorable. From our website, to our social media conversations, and our special email offers, we want each touch point that you have with us to be streamlined and effortless. One of the key people who helps keep our communication and messaging on point and cohesive, is our Director of Marketing, Jessica Rechkemmer. We sat down with Jessica to talk inspiration, creativity, and a little bit of life too.

Tell us a little bit about where you grew up.

I grew up in the small town of Clear Lake, Iowa. My parents bought an abandoned farm with 10 acres in the country and we made it our home! We had a bunch of furry critters around the farm including dogs, cats, and horses. My mom is also an avid gardener, so she spent a lot of time cultivating organic fruits and vegetables for our family meals. She also lobbied against the farmers in our area to stop spraying pesticides. Even though Clear Lake is a small town, it does have a claim to fame – Richie Valens (La Bamba), Buddy Holly, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, all performed at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake (and then tragically died in a plane crash.) Growing up with the historic Surf Ballroom nearby allowed my love of live music to grow at a young age.

Where do your greatest passions lie?

Spending time with my family and friends. Gardening, enjoying music, decorating, drinking wine, and eating delicious food.

Where would we most likely find you on the weekends?

Portland has a great food scene, so you can generally find me out and about and trying new restaurants. I love getting outdoors and running around town with my dog, Lanie. Another one of my favorite things to do on the weekend is to simply sit out on my deck and sip wine!

What brought you to the Marketing Department at GiftTree? Tell us a little about your adventures!

After I graduated from the University of Iowa I was looking for a new adventure. I had never been to Portland, but decided to take a chance and moved here in the Fall of 2001. My first job here was at Lloyd Athletic Club where I wore many different hats including: front desk manager, sales, and general bookkeeping. While I was working there I also started my own corporate cleaning company, called GrimeStoppers. This was a great adventure, my favorite part was of course designing my logo and getting new clients! My favorite tagline on a print marketing piece that we ran was “Let us take the case to knock dirt out of your workplace!” Get it? It was a play off of Charlie’s Angels. I moved on from Lloyd and worked for a mortgage company in Vancouver, Washington for several years. Then, over nine years ago I was offered a job at GiftTree and I’ve been here ever since!

What inspires you most about working at GiftTree?

I really love working with such a dedicated and passionate team.

Which lines (or types of gifts) have you most enjoyed working on?

I have really enjoyed working on our Epicurean line! It has been a great place to showcase some new photography shots by Amy and Jordan, we lovingly call these our “glamour shots.”

What are some of your favorite gifts offered by GiftTree?

My number one favorite gift would be the New Baby Crystal Bear, it is so unique and beautiful! After that I love many of our personalized gifts, especially the Monogrammed Decanter with Aerator, and our new Embossed Leather Wine Log. Also, our Segura Viudas Champagne and Godiva Chocolates gift is absolutely gorgeous and one of my hands-down favorites!

What was the best gift you’ve ever given?

I would say for my parents… being born! Just kidding. I do pride myself in being a great gift giver though. For my brother’s 30th birthday I found a really cool MC Escher print, called Encounter. I chose it because it reminded us of great times spent with friends dancing.

And finally, what was the best gift you’ve ever received?

In 2006 my older brother took me to my first of seven Coachellas! It was the best ever!
