Saturday, October 20th is Sweetest Day! “What is Sweetest Day?,” you ask, “Is it like Valentine’s Day?” Contrary to common belief, Sweetest Day is not a romantic holiday for couples at all. Think of it more as a “Gesture of Kindness Day”. While only a small portion of the United States knows about this Midwest tradition, we’re all about celebrating Sweetest Day here at GiftTree.
The History of Sweetest Day
Since the 1920s, Sweetest Day has been an Ohio tradition every third Saturday in October. A candy maker in Ohio named Herbert Kingston created the holiday because he wanted to give candy away (rather than boost sales) as a gesture of kindness to the poor and needy in Cleveland. Sweetest Day’s original name was “The Sweetest Day of the Year”, because it’s an opportunity to remember those less fortunate and do something sweet.
