Valentine’s Day By the Numbers

Valentine’s Day is one of the most celebrated day in the U.S., and if you are on this website reading this blog, chances are you are looking for Valentine’s Day gifts to help celebrate it. Here are some facts and figures to comfort you in your search:

-More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day.

-In 1866, candy manufacturer NECCO made the first heart candies with phrases on them, which were back then called “Motto Hearts.” According to NECCO, approximately 8 billion of these chalky candies are sold between Jan. 1 and Feb. 14.

-15 percent of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine’s Day (which I personally think is great).

-Only about 3 percent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets.

-The U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, Mexico, and France are the only countries to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

-Teachers receive the most Valentine’s Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and then, sweethearts. Children aged 6 to 10 exchange more than 650 million Valentine’s cards with teachers, classmates, and family members.

-In total, approximately 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year, which is second only to Christmas cards. Hallmark has more than 1,330 different cards specifically prepared for Valentine’s Day.
