Chocolate Beer?

Scientists have recently discovered that chocolate was invented nearly 3,100 years ago in Central America – and not as the sweet treat that it is today. Instead, archeological evidence shows that chocolate was originally a celebratory beer-like beverage enjoyed by the Aztecs and Mayans.

Scientists believe that the chocolate beverage was made by fermenting the sweet pulp that surrounds the seeds of the cacao plant. The resulting brew was a spicy, frothy drink similar to beer in texture and alcoholic content. The cacao beverage was often served at fancy occasions and was used by families as a status symbol.

Something to think about the next time you send someone one of our gourmet gift baskets that contain high-cacao-content chocolate…
