Joseph Phelps Napa Valley Insignia Red 2008

Vintage:

2008

Ratings:

97 points by The Wine Advocate

Acclaim:

The 2008 Insignia boasts aromatic layers of dark roasted coffee and graphite. The seductive mouth-feel has excellent length, intensely ripe black fruit, minerality and creaminess that tie together seamlessly on the palate.

Tasting Notes:

Full medium ruby. Black fruits, minerals, licorice, tar, menthol and sweet oak on the nose. Sweet and creamy on entry, then quite penetrating... and rather powerful Insignia with the structure to require, and reward, considerable aging.

Blend:

89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot

Cellaring:

With proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2038.

Acclaim:

"The 2011 Opus One expresses fresh aromas of bright fruit, herbes de provence, bay leaf and cassis which give way to subtler notes of black tea and white pepper. The wine's round tannins and creamy texture envelop the familiar flavors of fresh cherry, cranberry, and boysenberry with a touch of dark chocolate. This polished and age-worthy wine simultaneously offers a satiny finish and a slight grip off tannin at the close." -Winemaker's Notes

Tasting Notes:

"The 2011 Opus One may turn out to be one of the surprises of the year. A brilliant, precise wine, the 2011 impresses for its energy. Sweet floral and spiced notes lead to expressive dark red berries, mocha, anise and new leather in a brilliant Opus One." -Vinous

Blend:

71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec

Cellaring:

Indulge now or cellar through 2018.
