    Meet the Designer: Erica Thissell

Erica Thissell is one of GiftTree’s main designers. Her work for GiftTree is seen in our impressive seasonal and holiday-themed gift towers such as the Mother’s Day Chocolate & Sweets, as well as other popular year-round themed gifts such as the Little Chef Gift Set, Get Well Plush Doctor Play Set, and Monogrammed Baby Rattle and Plush Bundle Gift Set. Recently we asked Erica to give us an inside glimpse in the life of a gift designer at GiftTree.

Tell us a bit about your background as a designer.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Art and Design from the Art Institute of Phoenix. Since 2003 I have been working as a designer in all different avenues from television to fashion.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I think I get most of my inspiration when I just simply take a walk outside.

When did you become interested in design?

I would have to say my interest came when I was a little girl and used to draw on my plastic play kitchen. I’ve always loved art and everything that comes with it.

What is your proudest accomplishment as a designer?

Designing an entire clothing line and throwing a fashion show in Malibu, CA.

Can you describe your style in just a few words?

My style is a fusion of elegance and peculiarity, with a little adventure thrown in just to keep people on their toes.

What are your two favorite gift basket designs we have at GiftTree?

Tropical Indulgence Gourmet Tower and Little Chef Embroidered Gift Set

If you had the freedom to design anything, anywhere, what would it be?

I would design animatronic creatures for movies, just like Jim Henson.

What materials do you like to use the most and why?

I am definitely a mixed media person. I love working with Sculpty Clay to make little characters and paint with all different kinds of media, most of the time in the same painting. I also sew and embroider all kinds of clothing and blankets. Art is limitless with me; I’ve even soldered old junk together to make a sculpture. Just using my hands to create things makes me ultimately happy.

What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

Having fun and great laughs while BBQing with friends and family.

    What is your dream job?

To own a studio which creates characters for children’s movies in all types of media.

One personal belonging you just couldn’t live without?

    My art supplies!!!

Finally, what is the best part of working for GiftTree?

Everyone that works here is amazing and talented, but the best part about working here is bringing my dog to work everyday.
