Meet Maverick

MaverickHe’s a rebel, an edgy kind of guy befitting his name. We rescued him 7 years ago from doggy jail. His rap sheet said he was arrested for chasing horses—a big no-no in these parts. We didn’t have high expectations for Maverick. The first weekend with us we took him to the beach and he promptly jumped off a 50 foot cliff in his enthusiasm. He must be a bit like the Abominable Snowman from Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer because he bounced—not a scratch on him (thank goodness). Despite his shady background and obvious lack of common sense, Maverick has become a model citizen and an important part of the family. He’s given up his wild days. He now spends most of his time sneaking onto the couch when he thinks we aren’t looking or visiting the neighbors to beg for a biscuit or two. To us he’ll always be a renegade, the leader of the pack, a true maverick who lives up to his name.
What’s your dog’s name and what’s the story behind your pet?  I’d love to hear all about it.

  1. People always ask how we chose our dog’s name. It’s not all that common of a name but it’s not off the wall either. Oliver will be three years old this July. He is a gorgeous black lab with personality to spare. Within five minutes of picking him out of a litter of 8 puppies and loading him in the car I had his name. It wasn’t a name I had really heard much and I don’t know anyone with his name. People may say it’s silly but I looked in his little grey eyes and I swear he told me his name was Oliver.

  2. This is a great post!

  3. My husband and I were talked into meeting on a blind date by family and friends. We met at Mcmenamins Kennedy School and the rest is history. When we got a yellow lab together the name Kennedy seemed like a great way to commemorate our first date, plus it’s a great name.

  4. Funny, we considered both Lucy and Lola for our puppy, but we finally decided on Cora. We just liked the name a lot. Unfortunately, we were later reminded that Cora is the name of our niece’s step mom. I guess a little bit of a faux pas; good thing Cora (the human) has a good sense of humor.
