National Grandparents Day celebrates its 30th year as a national holiday on September 13. President Carter signed the National Grandparents Day proclamation in 1978 to recognize the holiday every first Sunday after Labor Day beginning in 1979. The founder of the holiday, Marian McQuade, first began lobbying to add Grandparents Day as a national holiday around 1970. In 1973, West Virginia recognized the day as a state holiday.

According to the National Grandparents Day Council, the holiday was created in hopes of encouraging more Americans to take the time to honor their own grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become away of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer. The official song of National Grandparents Day is “A Song For Grandma And Grandpa” by Johnny Prill. The official flower is the Forget Me Not.
