Earth Day Challenge

Earth Day is one of those days each year that give us all the opportunity to search ourselves to see how we can live more consciously. We all know that less cars on the road, recycling, and CFL light bulbs are better for the environment, but knowing this and applying this information are two different things.

Here at GiftTree, we had an Earth Day Challenge to see how we could apply earth-friendly actions into our daily lives. The results of the challenge varied.

For some, like Luba in Customer Service and Crystal in Business Development, recycling was a primary focus. They both successfully recycled ALL of her recyclables. Penny in Customer Service committed herself to using her re-usable shopping bags. She mentioned that it can be challenging to remember to put the bags back in the car so she’s prepared for next time. I can definitely relate to that.

Our very own Craig and Esther were probably the most successful with their Earth Day goals. They’ve planted a garden, started a compost pile, and they’re taking turns riding their bikes to work. Personally, I should have chosen a better goal. I was going to dry my towels on our outdoor clothes line on sunny days. Unfortunately, Washington state doesn’t offer many days of sunshine in April and I didn’t get to use my clothes line once. I’m determined that this will be the year I give it a try though.

I’m sure GiftTree will do another Earth Day Challenge next year. It’s fun and motivating when we’re all trying to make improvements together. It will be even more fun to see how we can continue to make improvements throughout the year.

  1. It does make a difference. My nieces school recycles everything from paper to plastic. I have been doing it for some time now and I am amazed everytime I take the hudge bag of wasted paper junk mail.
