Trees Provide the Air We Breathe

Okay, so must of us know that trees produce air but did you know that they actually take in carbon-dioxide and give out oxygen, “breathing” through their leaves?  Interestingly enough, a medium-sized tree generates the same amount of oxygen as each one of us needs to breathe. Vancouver Washington, where I live, is rapidly growing. When I first moved here 10 years ago there was a two lane road outside my neighborhood with a horse pasture and a church with a dirt parking lot. Now it’s 6 lanes and thriving businesses line the sidewalks. When I sit in my backyard I hear traffic instead of birds chirping. In fact, every spare spot in my vicinity has been built on or is in the process of being built on. One day I was driving my son to school and we saw a new area where the ground had been leveled.  My son asked me why people want to cut down all the trees, what air will be left for us to breathe if there are no trees left? That coming from an 8 year old…

I used to dream of living in a loft apartment in downtown Seattle. Now I think I’d rather live out in the country where my neighbors house isn’t within arms reach of mine and where I can enjoy piece and quiet. What changes have you seen in your city in the past 10 years?

Another great idea, help our air by buying a tree from GifTree!  You know I had to throw that in there :)  We have the Seeds of Life Oak Tree Kit and the Ginkgo Tree-to-Be with Personalized Tag.  Both are great gifts or buy one for yourself and plant a tree in your backyard!

  1. When I was a child we lived at Rural Route 1. Today it’s called highway 503. BIG changes!

  2. I moved to Vancouver from Massachusetts 10 years ago and I always thought Vancouver was considered country compared to MA or even Ukraine where I grew up as a child. Now, the city has grown so much for the last few years that people might confuse it with Portland, OR. Down the road from were I live, used to be a horse barn and acres of plain fields and now it filled with just newly developed subdivisions.
