The Most Meaningful Bouquet

Roses: Summer MedleyAs the wedding season draws near there are quite a few brides and maybe even a few grooms out there selecting which flowers to have in their wedding. From bouquets to the boutonnières, flowers are a great way to tie together a theme and the feel of a wedding. We’ve all heard of people choosing blooms for their color and scent but what about their meaning? It’s pretty common knowledge that red roses mean love but what about the rest of the colors and species? According to the Society of American Florists each flower has a different meaning.

Here are a few surprising ones:
Alstroemeria- aspiring
Aster- contentment
Baby’s Breath-festivity
Bachelor Button-anticipation
Black Eyed Susan-encouragement
Carnation-
Pink-gratitude
Red-flashy
Red & White-Unity
Striped-refusal
White-remembrance
Yellow-cheerful
Cosmos-peaceful
Daffodil-chivalry
Daisy-innocence
Delphinium-boldness
Freesia-spirited
Gardenia-joy
Holly-domestic happiness
Hydrangea-perseverance
Iris-inspiration
Larkspur-beautiful spirit
Orange Blossom-fertility
Pansy-loving thoughts
Rose-
Pink-friendship
Red-love
White-purity
Yellow-zealous
Stephanotis-good luck
Star of Bethlehem-hope
Statice-success
Sunflower-adoration
Violet-faithfulness
Wisteria-steadfastness

So the next time you send a wedding gift of flowers or are purchasing your own, consider something like the Summer Medley with bachelor buttons, delphinium, red carnations, red and yellow roses. It says, “May you always anticipate each others bold and flashy zealous love.”

  1. Thanks Marrisa! I always thought yellow roses meant friendship…

  2. This is very good and valuable information, thank you Marrisa!

  3. Yellow roses actually do imply friendship, but remember that roses are in a league of their own when it comes to the color chart. Check out http://www.teleflora.com/rose_colors.asp for more info.
