A Party Balloon Record!

Ian Ashpole from England set a new record for the highest flight powered by party balloons. Amazingly, he reached a height of 11,000 feet by strapping himself to 600 common birthday party balloons.

Asked why he wanted to even attempt such a balloon stunt he replied "I saw a film called The Red Balloon, in which a boy floats off on balloons, when I was a child and ever since I've wanted to do it."

At the zenith of his flight, Mr. Ashpole cut himself free from his harness with a knife and parachuted back to earth. When his wife Louise Ashpole was asked about her husband's party balloon stunt, she said: "I don't understand it. I have no idea why he wants to do it. "It's obviously great fun for him. I don't think I could stop him doing it if I wanted to."
