Detroit Flowers and Plants:
Originally built in 1904, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory in Detroit houses a variety of plants. It sits on a 13 acre site which is also home to a perennial flower garden, a rose garden and a lilly pond which is stocked with fish from the aquarium in the warmer summer months. The Conservatory was reconstructed between 1952 and 1954, at which time Anna Scripps Whitcomb died and left her 600 plant orchid collection to the City of Detroit. The city then dedicated the conservatory to her.
The conservatory is made up of 5 different sections and covers more than 1 acre, The dome which is 85 feet high with 100,600 cubic feet of space for growing large palms and other tropical trees, the north wing features a collection of ferns, cactus, and succulents, the south wing features tropical flowers and plants such as bananas, oranges, coffee, sugar, orchids. The showhouse has a continuous display of blooming plants and flowers.
